Browser window order

Maybe a silly question but... Running Windows 7 Home Premium, 64 bit, and IE 9.
I usually have IE windows open monitoring 6 different forums. When I hover the mouse over the IE icon on the task bar, the 6 IE windows show preview panes across the bottom of the desktop, in the order in which they were opened. Sometimes the order of these preview panes changes. What causes this? Where/how are these preview panes stored?

As I don't use IE I can only guess. Maybe the order in which you last viewed them?

I don't think the order in which viewed has an affect. The order seldom changes, and seems to change randomly. I have shortcuts to the forums in the "Favorites Bar" and open them in order left to right when I turn on the computer. The computer may stay on and the specific web pages open for days at a time. I usually only reboot when required for updates, installs or uninstalls, or after cleanup and defrag.
Not a real problem, just curious.

Hello Chuck,

Usually the IE9 taskbar thumbnail previews are in the same order as the tabs are in IE9. If you move a tab, then it changes in the IE9 taskbar thumbnail previews as well.

Hope this helps, :)
Shawn

Shawn,
I don't use tabs. Each forum is opened in its own browser window.

Don't know for sure. But I suspect it uses the z-order. Try activating different windows. Then do the preview. See if the window closest to the top is right most in the preview.

For me with separate windows, the IE9 taskbar thumbnail previews always had them in the order (left to right) of first opened, then the next opened, etc....

I suppose that if you were moving a window, if it momentarily tried to merge as a tab in another window, it may change the order.

I don't have IE installed. If you want to try an experiment.. just open the windows as you did before. Then click on the first window opened to make it topmost. See if it shifts to the right extreme or maybe makes no difference. I'm just curious. If you have zillions of other things to do, which I'm sure you have, maybe someone else will try it out. :)

edit: I just tried with 3 FF windows. The only thing that seemed to change the preview order was Alt-Tab. But it wasn't predictable. Sometimes it shifted the order, sometimes not.
