Browsing Win7 shared folders in home network - how???

Hello Group

I have installed Win7 on a new PC and been playing around with it for a couple of days.

I have added it to my home workgroup and shared out some folders. I have turned off Windows firewall, however if I try to view the shared folders from other machines (XP) on the home network I get asked for a login and password.

Yet if I browse the other XP machines from the Win7 machine I can see all their folders. I can't find a setting anywhere that would seem to address this!

workgroup, or homegroup? workgroup doesnt even need a password homegroup must have one.

Don't know what a 'homegroup' is to be honest.

When I say 'Home Workgroup' what I mean is that I am using this machine at home and not in a corporate type environment.

I have set the win7 machine to be in the same named workgroup as the other PC's at home.

I also don't have any password set on the admin account.

When I try to browse the machine in 'network neighbour' on the XP machine I can see the Win7 box. When I try to open it I am prompted for a username and password. If I put in the username as 'win7\adminaccount' it still doesn't give me access.

If I try the reverse, ie browse for the XP machine from the Win7 box I don't have any problems.

I have turned of Windows Firewall on both machines....

Is there some sort of new Win7 setting I am not modifying correctly?

I think the fact you don't have a password on your account is the problem.

If I put in the username as 'win7\adminaccount' it still doesn't give me access.

You have to use the credentials of the remote computer, not the local computer...
And a password must be set on the remote account you are trying to sign in as.

For those who have a functioning homegroup: are passwords still required in the situation the OP is raising?

advanced sharing
discovery on
file and print on
public off
password protected off

Then add user Everyone to the shares permissions and security to level you desire (R/RW/Full)

And yes damn M$ for calling its new feature HomeGroup, I too use Home as my workgroup name. Anything to confuse!

The remote machine is called win7 so specifying the username as win7\adminaccount on the local machine should be using the credentials on the remote machine ie win7?

Ah, yes, if I change the Password Protected to off I can now see the shares.

I found I can specify who to share the folder with (on the main share screen) and then set permissions for the share if I click the 'Advanced Sharing' button.

I still don't fully understand why I couldn't see the shares remotely after I had set a password to the admin account and tried to log in with those credentials....

What is the difference between a workgroup and this (new to me at least) term homegroup?
