I have a Dell XPS 13, L321X that freezes upon entering sleep mode, closing the lid causes the screen the turn off but the computer stays running for a period of time before it shuts down.

Upon restarting, windows notifies Improper Shut Down and gives me an BSOD error. I'm going to include the dump file.

For information, the system is Running Windows 7, and does contain an SSD (Samsung PM830 mSata). I only have some of the basic dell programs installed, such as the Touchpad software and Keyboard Controls, along with MSE as my anti-virus. There isn't too much on this laptop to cause a problem, mostly running chrome and office 365 software. I updated video/audio/intel drivers, and other drivers, still have the problem.

I believe the problem started after a Microsoft Update, since I usually turn off automatic updating, and the problem appeared around the time I updated.

I don't believe that I am the only one to have this problem, I've attempted to use a Microsoft Hotfix (but the hotfix wouldn't run on my system) for a similar issue that someone had, but the error that windows showed was slightly different,.

Dump File

Edit**** I can not roll back windows, so do not suggest.

I replaced the link, figured the normal dump file would be enough.

Your Fresco Logic xHCI (USB3) Device Driver seems to be causing problems, please update the driver from the Dell website for your specific model.

Get rid of intel rapid storage. First uninstall it from Control Panel > Programs and Features. Then Uninstall the driver from device manager.
  1. Right click on "my computer" icon and click "manage" on the context menu.
  2. It will open the "computer management" window.
  3. Select "Device Manager" in the left pane, It will list all the existing devices up.
  4. Expand "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers" by clicking on the triangle in front of it.
  5. Select one Intel device item under it, right click, uninstall.
  6. Continue the process for all Intel items under "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers"
  7. Now restart the computer. At restart, windows will auto configure the appropriate native system driver.

Alright, I'll attempt to follow what you posted.

I run MSE, but I uninstalled it for troubleshooting.

Thanks, I'll post back with any updates soon.

I uninstalled intel RST, but I did not follow the quote from 'Arc' I'm a bit reluctant to uninstall my primary drive controller, since I've never done it before. But I attempted to update USB3.0 software, with no luck. So I disabled the Fresco USB3.0 controller and that solved my problem, laptop now goes to sleep without crashing and resumes properly.

In DM, the port wasn't working properly, which is strange, I ever noticed it before, so I am unsure if the port is dead, but I have a feeling it is. This laptop has one USB 2.0 and one USB 3.0 port, the 3.0 port sits adjacent to the built-in battery which remains very hot when charging. So off my limited knowledge, I assume the heat may have killed the port, and it caused this problem. I could be wrong, just a hypothesis. I had this laptop for nearly a year, with somewhat moderate continuous use, around 2500-3000 hours.

But my problem is solved, I don't need USB 3.0, even if I did, I have a fairly spec'd desktop for that use. Thanks a lot Blue Robot.
