before you do that please open a elevated command prompt ( click start, type cmd in the search box, right click on the cmd entry and select run as administrator) in the black box that opens, copy/paste sfc /scannow. If you decide to type it, notice the space between the sfc and the /. It is a system file checker which will scan your system files and attempt to correct any missing or corrupt files. What we want are the results to say windows found no integrity violations. If it says files were found but could not be repaired, close the box, reboot and run it again, after opening the administrative command prompt. You may have to reboot and run it three times for it to repair all system files. If it can't repair them after 3 reboots, let us know.

I have not yet installed my application software, only the SF Diagnostic Tool, after the update-saga and the first BSOD. Running sfc /scannow returns with no problems found.

After some days of interval, I looked at your thread again; and this one drawn my attention ....

Well, using IPDT I got: pass (prompting "PASSED"), fail (prompting "FAIL") and one BSOD 0x124...

Probably we are very close to a decision, as you also said ...

The processor rarely fails in non-OC'ed PCs.

Rarely or not, the thing is that the processor fails that you know; which is a single enough reason for a stop 0x124 BSOD.

Stress test the CPU again, with another stresser.

Run Small FFTs, Large FFTs and Blend, all of them. Let us know if it can recreate the stop 0x124 BSOD.

I ran prime95 before the Windows reinstalls, for an entire day, going well. I also ran it for only some minutes before it failed (without a BSOD).

While hanging on, I run it again right now. How long for each of the three tests?

Well, yes, I would have thought it to be easier to pinpoint what piece of software or kit is knackered. If one sums up the hours of all you helpers plus my own time spent on this, and puts a, let's say, Polish hourly rate onto it, one could probably have purchased a nice barrel of single malt or two Xeons...

Arc, I'm going to try to type this. He did have a fail on IPD, as well as a pass and a BSOD 0X124. Now, was the fail because of the CPU or because of whatever is causing the 0X124, assuming it is not the CPU. We have run every test except Furmark because I don't think his card can handle it. It is brutal enough that Nvidia and AMD tried to outlaw it. He has passed every other test, including swapping ram with another machine.

If it were my Machine I would beg, borrow or whatever needed another PSU and Graphics card and try that. If it still had BSODs. I would RMA the CPU and the Motherboard. There is nothing left to test. We have tested hard drives, done Vanilla installs. Maybe you can think of something else. That would be my choice if it were my machine. But, consider, he will be without his work machine for at least a month. But, most places will do an advanced RMA with a credit card. I have done several of them with no problem. That's it for me for a while.

Well, the place where I bought all this gear is since long gone bankrupt, so I'd have to send the CPU to Intel here, who will then send it on to the Fiji Islands or wherever Intel intels; and I'd have to send the mainboard all the way to Asusistan on the other side of this fine planet.

If nothing can be done, which looks likely, I could buy a new mainboard and a new processor (not the same ones, as there are speedier ones available like the Intel i7-5820K which most people doing what I do favour) and either toss the old kit or donate it to a local charity. At least the case, SSD, HDD, RAM and whatnot are in ship shape, I believe, so all that can be put to new use.

That's not why. I am a total numskull with computers. I just had an argument with a Hornet's nest and quit counting at 35 stings. Half of them on my hands, so it is not easy to type. They got me good. But that was just round 1. Round 2 will be a different outcome. My hands keep swelling so, it's hard to type and my eyes are starting. That's the only reason. I haven't quit on you, just taking a little break due to unforeseen consequences. As a famous man once said "I'll be baaaack"

You should call Intel and talk to them and get it replaced anyway, no matter what you do. If you have an IPD that says FAIL, there is not much the should be able to argue with. It's their test and it failed. You could sell a brand new CPU and offset the cost of whatever you buy. That would mean the 5960X would cost you the same as a 5930K. I would imagine with what you do, an extra 2 cores and 4 threads would help things along quite a bit. Your board should bring a few good Pounds as well. You may be able to upgrade fairly cheaply.

Sure, I won't just trash the "old" processor and mainboard. There's value in them for me after all.

All the while, prime95 (maximum heat setting) and IntelBurnTest (maximum setting) are chugging along together. I get a maximum temperature of 64°C. If they still run in the morning, I'll bother with installing my application again. If not, I just get a new processor and mainboard and later deal with Intel and ASUS (three year warranty runs out in December).

I really don't like it to run unattended, because of heat. You need a program that will shut the computer down if it gets too hot. I have one but it is an older program and I've never used it for that, but it is really a combination of 2 programs, one of which is very old, but I use it anyway. But, I have a NH-D14 and it is about the best air CPU cooler you can get. They have come out with a new version of it, the Noctua NH-D15. Supposed to be better. I really don't know what program will shut the computer down.

To record the temperature, I downloaded and installed Core Temp 1.0 RC6. You can set it to sleep, hibernate or shutdown, when a certain temperature has been reached.

I have the NH-D14 fitted in all compute boxes, the fan mounted between the two heat sinks. The boxes (Fractal Design Define R4) are exhausted all around with NF-series fans.
