MSE will cover everything unless you discover you have a particular pattern of infection which requires a tailored solution.

Run Malwarebytes and Super Anti-Spyware scans periodically to double check.

If you want to increase the coverage install paid real-time MB protection.

Keep a baseline and then a recent Win7 backup image to replace reinstall just in case.

for now i will go with MSE but i will have to at some point change to something else i think, maybe eset, i cant bring myself to stay with a windows application like that for too long.

We do need the DMP file as it contains the only record of the sequence of events leading up to the crash, what drivers were loaded, and what was responsible.

If you are overclocking STOP

You may be able to get the DMP files without crashing by booting into safe mode (F8) with networking.

To enable us to assist you with your computer's BSOD symptoms, upload the contents of your "\Windows\Minidump" folder.

The procedure:

* Copy the contents of \Windows\Minidump to another (temporary) location somewhere on your machine.
* Zip up the copy.
* Attach the ZIP archive to your post using the "paperclip" (file attachments) button.
*If the files are too large please upload them to a file sharing service like "Rapidshare" and put a link to them in your reply.

To ensure minidumps are enabled:

* Go to Start, in the Search Box type: sysdm.cpl, press Enter.
* Under the Advanced tab, click on the Startup and Recovery Settings... button.
* Ensure that Automatically restart is unchecked.
* Under the Write Debugging Information header select Small memory dump (256 kB) in the dropdown box (the 256kb varies).
* Ensure that the Small Dump Directory is listed as %systemroot%\Minidump.
* OK your way out.
* Reboot if changes have been made.

I am crashing tons with Catalyst 12.2's on a new machine. Kinda stuck with these drivers since I have a new HD 9750. I have attached my minidumps from the last 2 BSOD from the past hour or so. I have been downloading, but not playing intensive games or anything. I didn't know anyone could read these minidump files, so I appreciate any help.

Have you tried uninstalling CCC and using just the driver? You only need the full bloatware package if you're using special settings (overclocking). Uninstalling it solves a lot of problems.

I can extend the desktop - I can't make one wide desktop or spread games across multiple monitors without Eyefinity. I think. Still learning, admittedly...

game drivers are tricky for sure... i just had ANOTHER crash! ill post my minidump

it was the same 3 as always, i was able to hold out 3 days, but in the end it crashed anyways... BSV says it was caused by driver dxgkrnl.sys like last time, and the time before, at adress dxgkrnl.sys+5d000

Strictly in terms of how often they make systems crash Microsoft Security Essentials crashes least.

and which is an all around, not a virus in of itself, good database, checks usb drives and disks, etc? some crashing is alright, but if i reinstall trend it may continue working again, proble, i refuse to use nortan, trend is hard to install, mcafee just sucks in my opinion

I agree and personally avoid Norton, McAfee, Kaspersky.

For myself Esets NOD32 or Eset Smart Security works, is easy to use, and zero infections.

ok so problem is back, apears rather common in ati 12.2 drivers so i tryed the ati 12.2 pre cert drivers to see if that will help at all. people are complaining about how they are making new drivers every month and not being therough with the fixes

Then i put the ccc software 'only' on top of that. Been a full day since a bluescreen and they were happening once an hour or so before. I don't have the luxury of downgrading since i have an HD9750.

didnt work, for some reason they wont fully install, opend my admin acc, did a complete removal, of ccc and the drivers, and am re installing AGAIN!!! to see if this works from a clean install, maybe, maybe not, im running out of options beyond a clean install of windows, which is looking real good right bot now since im upgrading processors soon

Thornton, try running with only the Display driver and not the full CCC bloatware.

In fact after uninstalling CCC in Programs & Features watch optional Windows Updates to see if Win7 has a driver it prefers before reimporting just the driver from ATI webpage for your model.

it has in the past, the problem is it wants older versions that dont support my eyefinity... i mrunning 3 monitors right now and it makes it very difficult not to try to stay up to date. i will see how this goes, it seemed like a much more full install, but that may have been because it was a clean install, ill give it a few, see how it goes, but like i said, its been over a year since ive given my pc a clean install so it might be time to clean up the junk and get things right

no, he is using 2 monitors, i am using 3, although im not taking advantage of eyfinity, without vcc installed, i cannot do a 3 monitor extended display to my understanding, i am using my monitors LIKE an eyefinity display by not playing in fullscreen mode and it save me GPU power on idle, idle gpu with eyefinity is about 15-25% but with extended display its ziltch so i just play eyefinity games in window mode

I read somewhere, maybe this thread even, that Overdrive bugs was the cause of the atikmpag.sys blue screens. I had of course set everything to default and disabled overclocking, but no joy - I think even ticking the overdrive box once screws you.

I have had a great amount of success the past two days with absolutely no bluescreens. Here are the exact steps I followed, so maybe it will help others:

Prereqs:
Winrar or equivalent
Driver Cleaner from drivercleaner.net (fully updated)

1. Uninstalled the display driver in Device Manager
2. Uninstalled the Catalyst 12.2 in Programs and Features
3. Rebooted into Safe Mode
4. Ran Driver Cleaner [make sure you update this with an internet connection or it will miss files]
5. Checked all the ATI filters, removed the ATI garbage

***EDIT - You do NOT want to remove the /Windows/WINSXS files or SFC will fail! The more I read about this (affects both Driver Sweeper and Driver Cleaner) the more I think you should not do this step unless you want to risk reinstalling Windows when the next SP comes out)***

6. Reboot
7. Unzipped the Catalyst 12.2 package with Winrar
8. Went into Device Manager, pointed the Display component to the unpacked Catalyst directory for driver update. (standard VGA driver was installed)
9. Reboot
10. Ran the Catalyst installer, installed *only* CCC. (nothing else checked even the AMD Display driver since its already installed in step 8 -except the required installer itself)
11. Reboot
12. Set my desired settings in CCC - but never *ever* have I accessed the Performance/Overdrive dialog
13. Used MSI Afterburner to set overclocking.
14. Play Skyrim

give it a while and see also, my problem occurs kinda randomly, it just happend to me after 3 days of being in the clear so watch it and keep us up to date and i will try the same

I'll come back in the thread if I have another occurrence - but my bluescreens were previously happening hourly at least - on a clean Win7 install. And I have been using my rig much more intensively today than earlier in the week.
