BSOD after overclocking gpu and changing cpu settings

Hi there,

I have recently been experiencing 100% cpu spikes in Battlefield 4, and all of my cores are unparked.
I use perfoverlay.drawgraph 1 , to get the game to show the bottleneck and hardware activity. and the cpu kept spiking and making the game lag for 1-3 seconds each time.

I looked online and ended up turning off amd turbo in my bios and overclocking my amd fx 6300 to the turbo speed. I have stock cooler. but people online have said it is completely fine to do this..
Then i installed msi afterburner and overclocked my gpu again(it used to be overclocked fine a while ago), and after playing battlefield 4 for 5 minutes or so i pressed ALT -TAB to go back to desktop while playing to turn on vsync in nvidia control panel. I did that and the vsync setting did not come into effect as my fps was still over 60.. 120 ish. So i keep playing normally for 3 minutes and i get a BSOD :(

I have attached the minidump file zipped using DM Log collector.

If you could help, that would be amazing !

Best regards,

James Duffy

Hello James and welcome to Sevenforums! :)

Your BSOD was caused by hardware failure specifically your CPU, by running !errrec in WinDbg gives an error code that equals to a L1 cache error, so that points to overclocking, overheating or a CPU defect.

So what kind of cooling do you have for the moment?

Cheers, Boris :)

Hi there,

Thank you so much for the fast reply ! :D
I have stock cooling on my and fx 6300.
I assumed my overclock would be ok because my stock turbo mode frequency was 4.1ghz.

And should I do anything about this issue ?
I restarted the pc , went into the bios and turned the overclock down a notch to 4ghz. Also I turned down my graphics card overclock. All seems to be running fine now. I left battlefield 4 playing for a while and at the start I noticed cpu spikes, but after a while it calms down abit. One thing I have noticed is when I play on battlefield 4 on a server by myself I notice hardly any cpu spikes at all !

Best regards,

James Duff

Also , my pc is new from 25th December 2015. So I shouldn't think it is a cpu defect D:

Well James if you are certain that CPU isn't defective nor that there is massive heat build ups in your PC then it pretty much comes down to that you might not be able to OC your CPU without it crashing. And like you yourself said, after taking the clock down a notch, the issue dispersed.

Boris.

My cpu temps hit maximum 60 degrees C even with my overclock which crashed my pc so I am pretty sure the temp isn't the problem.
By the way I do have one other question .. About a week ago I think I pushed my gpu overclock to far with an extra 50mhz over my current overclock. Then after playing for a while on bf4 the game had a 'red transparent overlay' on it. Then that went away after I pressed alt tab then went back to the game . 3 or so minutes later ,the screen turned black and the sound of the games slowly faded away until nothing. Also the num lock key on my keyboard would not turn off. I restarted and turned down the graphics overclock and all was fine. Could of the problem there been the CPU all that time ??

Thank you so much for your help so far , I really appreciate it !
Best regards,

James Duff

No if your screen turned black or got a red overlay then it would point to a graphics issue and basically this is why I would stay from OCing any hardware component because if something breaks down there's no warranty.

Also I think you'd get good fps with what you've got without the OC.

Ahh ok thank you :-) , Il probably go and take off the overclock then.. But what's up with the CPU spikes the CPU usage will randomly go to 100% in game and lag everything for a second of 2 :(
The lag spikes are the reason I overclocked :/

I was getting steady. 60fps then suddenly 20 fps when cpu spike happened. Nothing much in the map was even happening .

Again , I really appreciate your help !

Not exactly, the CPU reports the problem and tells where the problem has occurred, but the cause part is the part you need to find out. A cache problem is the most common thing one will see with a 0x124.

Well back to square one.

Saw in your system information file in wer that you have had problems with Windows Update, anything specific?
Also when BF4.exe crashed it pointed a faulty module named: kernelbase.dll

I'm still trying to piece this puzzle together so please be patient, thanks in advance!

Found out your installation is counterfeit and we cannot give support to counterfeit installations.

Cheers, Boris
