just an after thought... I have more than 1 hard drive in this pc, in fact have 4, so I decided to re-install Vista on an empty hard drive, exactly the same size and make of drive that 7 is on, and it has really struggled to install. It has finally gone on after about 1.5 hours, but not smoothly as pevious installs of Vista have. Could this be related in some way?

I am not sure. See if you get any BSODs under Vista.

I'll leave this prime 95 running over night now on 7 and see if it comes back with any faults.

Two items stood out -

1. gdrv.sys noted in dump. It is driver for Gigabyte's Dynamic Energy Saver Advanced program. Make sure you have most recent updated driver.

2. Obvious OS corruption - "unknown_module" is not normal. Either hardware failure causing RAM not to properly hold kernel code, bad OS install, bad OS install source, etc... are all likely causes.

Run memtest86+ one stick at a time, alternate slots

You mentioned you have 4 hard drives and reinstalled Vista. Are other Windows OS' on any of them? Do you own full retail copy of Windows 7? If not and Windows 7 was a Vista upgrade, you cannot reinstall Vista.

I suggest you wipe entire HDD with KillDisk and reinstall Windows 7.

KillDisk --> Format HDD jcgriff2.com

The above are my suggestions. Given that BSOD analysis community is comprised of a small number of analysts, it is counter-productive to have two active threads, even though at two different forums. It gets confusing when one does not know what the other has suggested and exactly what you have or have not followed up on.

Therefore, I am closing this thread and will post these findings at SF as well.

Sorry for posting on another.
the 4 hard drives I have are:
2 x seagate 160Gb
1 x seagate 500GB
1 x maxtor 100Gb
the copy of vista is a legal copy and validates and is installed on one of the 160.s. The copy of 7 is a legal copy and validates and installed on the other 160.
ALL installations, be it vista or 7 or XP previous to that, are from clean installs. including low level formatting of the hard drives.
The copy of 7 is from a clean install each time, and the re-install of vista was on the other drive used for storage, but did have XP on prior to that, but was low level formatted first.

the RAM is a matched pair of corsair XMS3 1600 (4Gb in total) I have already run memtest on the memory for over 9 hours with no failures.
Kaspersky is gone and its still doing it
gigabyte program is gone and its still doing it
as regards formatting and re-installing 7, this is the 5th installation of 7 in 4 weeks?
prime 95 has also been running now for 9 hours will no failures (AM3 phenom II 955 on a 790xta-ud4 board), and I'm at my wits end with it, I feel like thowing it through the window.
could the motherboard be at fault? I have always had a niggling suspicion about this board.
from day 1, install of 7 kept failling, then installed, now when installing vista, kept failling then installed??
these 3 items: cpu/motherboard/memory are the only 3 new items on my pc. Prior to that had a intel 6420 with vista on it with NO problems what so ever. The 2 160 drives I've even taken them out and installed vista on them to see if it was the drives, but vista flew on with no problems
any other ideas would be most welcome

just a quick update. I have spoken to the store I bought the items from, Scan International in the UK. I've gone through everything that has happened, and everyting you've told me to do. They think it may be the motherboard. So in about 10 mins will be whiping it out and taking it back. Hopefully that will sort it out.

took the M/b back yesterday and fitted it last night. At 9.03pm started to install windows 7, at 9.17pm windows 7 was on and the first 4 updates downloaded and installed (no kaspersky, just the MS security essentials).
left running overnight and seems to be OK, no BSOD's up to now. will keep you informed as the next few days unwind. I'm going to leave installing any other programs and drivers that windows hasn't installed for now, just to see how it goes. The only things that will be going on is office, and WSFTP pro so I can still update my website, but thats all.
Just a question if I may? there are 2 things in the device manager that are not installed and have an exclamation mark against them and which windows has not installed by itself, they are: Marvell 91xx config ATA device (sata 6Gb) and Universal serial bus (USB3) controller. Do you think it OK to install the drivers for these? or wait to see how the PC goes over the next few days??

I agree with Tews. Also I strongly suggest that you image your system on a separate drive. You can use the Windows built in backup or download a free imaging program. I use Macrium Reflect. This way, you will always have a clean system image to come back to without reinstalling. I store my images on an external USB drive.

As you install programs and find the computer is running smoothly, make another system image; they are stored by date. This can save you a lot of grief and time. The image saves everything - system, files, email, etc.

WHS, a member here, is an expert on Macrium Reflect if you have any questions about how to use it.

fingers and toes still crossed, NO BSOD's now after 2 full days. Looking more and more like it was the motherboard. Still havn't installed any 3rd party sortware yet, gonna wait another few days and see if its still stable.

Update: I've been taking it easy regarding installing programs, I'm limiting it to one or 2 a day. Yesterday office and WSFTP went on and had no problems, this morning I've installed winzip/winrar/acrobat reader/Flash and java, and up to now no problems.
So 4 days now and counting without BSOD's
Since changing the M/b I've noticed an increse in speed as well, everything seems to open and close quicker??

Really great news so far. By the way, there are some good, free alternatives to Adobe Reader that have much lighter footprints, use less resources and don't use the annoying Adobe updater.

It does seem as if the mobo was the problem. Let's give it a couple of more days. Then update us and we will mark this one as solved.

Update: Its now been well over 6 days since I took the M/b back and replaced it. No BSOD's since. I've taken it slow in installing all the software, but all bar 2 are now installed, and still no BSOD's. Will install the last couple of bits of software tomorrow. Hopefully there will be no problems.
