BSOD all the way to non boot

I'm typing this from my phone currently.

As the title implies, I've got a big problem.

I was of course messing around online, downloaded a bad file, forgot to virus scan it, got a modified mbr, then my hard drive driver went out, iastor.sys I think. I did a LOT of reading, tried to fix that, got it to start, then I found out my mbr was still bad. I downloaded and ran mbrcheck.exe, which allows my windows to start. After starting it blue screens and resets. I came here eventually, did a lot of recovery console work using bootrec.exe, now my computer refuses to boot. It goes to windows, hits the logo and gets a bsod that doesn't dump. I've been using a downloaded recovery disk. I've tried bootsect.exe, bootrec.exe /fixmbr, /fixboot, and /rebuildbcd.

I need help as I do not have a solid windows install disk so a repair installation or even wipe installation is out of the question.

If you have a legitimate key any windows 7 disc will work for you, unlike xp you don't require a specific disc to key.
You really do sound like you are in a reinstall situation here. Virus, followed by driver failures, followed by god only knows what.

Even if you got it working again I doubt the system would ever be stable again until a reformat could be done.

Hi,

If I understand correctly, you don't have an installation disk? How was Windows installed to this PC in the first place?

You might want to fill out your system specs to enable us to help you better.

Unfortunately, your system sounds too far gone for a repair, so I recommend a clean install, but you need a disk for that.

It might be possible to do a factory reset if its a laptop with an OEM licence. Do you have the manual to see what keystroke to use to do a factory reset?

For the future, and your own peace of mind I recommend getting a backup device for your personal data, they are very much worth the investment.
Depending on budget (and your personal backup needs) it could be anything from a usb flash drive. To a full external hard drive.
