My friend just got new computer (link to configuration he bought). It comes without OS, so i went and installed windows 7 ultimate (x64). While i was setting up his system, i got one BSOD. Afaik that is only bsod so far, but as my friend said to me, it froze on him at least couple of times (during windows update twice, during playing games).

Since i used this forum and you guys helped me back in '09, i'm confident you will find the culprit.

OS is not original, but i've used on at least two computers and it works flawlessly (same dvd). I'm starting to think windows update has something to do with freezing. There's just so much updates that might create problems until he install the last ones.

Installing win was straight forward business, i created two partitions etc...

Am unsure what you mean by the OS is original and has been used on two computers. Now usually that is only possible with a retail copy is this the case.?

The other thing to do is to use updates settings as in my pic and install them in small batches. If you choose to block any given one you just need to see the list that is available and right click on it and the click on Hide.

I saw the rule which says you shouldnt create new threads for same problem. This is same problem but on different machine.
My mother got laptop from work that was used by some guy that got laid off. He had password which we didnt know and after trying various solutions, none worked so i formated and installed windows 7 ultimate. Later i saw that the original was windows 7 home premium and i couldnt use serial code beneath it which was btw badly scratched, i guessed some characters and i think i got it right cause it said its for different version of windows. Instead of doing it again i just used win 7 loader :o After installing service pack 1 and all others windows updates, i got problem with nvidia graphics driver crashing and as of lately bsods. Its random, it can start when i open chrome, or change to aero theme. Screen just go black and back to normal with bubble message that nvidia driver crashed and was restarted. It can happen multiple times in a row finishing with bsod.

Laptop model is Toshiba Satellite U500-17F. I tried latest drivers from nvidia site, from toshiba site and now i'm on the ones that windows automatically installs, i think they are 320.xx

So i dont know if the laptop functioned before cause we couldnt get past logon screen and because of that i think its possible that hardware error is culprit

Firstly Nex mate technically you should strat a new thread but I know what you mean by seeing a similar problem:)

Now you say the original install was Home Premium and you now have Ultimate installed and what I or we would like to know is how did you install the Ultimate. Now as general rule we find that people install Ultimate thinking it will be so much better than Home which with perhaps the Pro version is more than enough for the average user.
So where did the Ultimate come from? If you want/ed to revert back to Home then you could have used this http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/219487-clean-reinstall-factory-oem-windows-7-a.html#post1839164 you would just need to make a bootable disk of the Home ISO install it and activate using the original code. But if you cannot see that code then as long as you can skip activation and get Windows running you can find the activation code for the original using Speccy Speccy - Download - in the readout you will find the original code because it is stored in the BIOS - see my pic because that activation code (for whatever version of Windows was installed) is tied to that motherboard especially if it was store bought machine or OEM copy.
Let us know what you want to do and where that Ultimate came from -ie retail or an OEM copy because if it was bought in either version I cannot see why you would want to go back to Home version.
BUT if the Ultimate is installed then you will get the activation code for it you have to boot from the ISO disk and install to get that Home version code.

Windows ultimate came from torrent sites, it's build with service pack 1 included. In my humble opinion, i dont think installing to home premium would fix this problem and also it would be giant pain only to see system riddled with the same problem.

As i said, i didnt have access to windows and it didnt even cross my mind that it may have been some other version, since i use ultimate only. I would get iso and use code, but what is done is done. I would do it regularly only if it 100% solves the problem.

Do you think that "pirated" version (win7 loader) could cause this problem? If thats the case, i might run Speccy and do it the right way (dont know if there's legit way of obtaining home premium iso).

Yes you are spot on Nex you need to find the activation code for that version and mate personally I am not a fan at all of torrent stuff - probably fairly safe in most cases but in my mind open to all sorts of problems.

Now if it was torrent loaded then who did you pay for the version? because anyone can download it that way but - and I could be very wrong it will probably be a pirated in the sense that you are downloading someone else's version and in that way because all editions of Windows at least are tied to the motherboard it was originally installed on and is in that respect not allowed to be used on another motherboard.

Now if you had bought the retail or an OEM version and installed it and say the motherboard bricked itself then you can install the retail version on another motherboard up to about three times - an OEM you need to contact Microsoft and explain the problem and usually they are pretty good at letting you put the OEM back on a new motherboard.

So in summary find the activation code and try to activate it but I am guessing you are going to be pushing it for Microsoft accepting it because it is in your description loaded through a torrent which has many sources and how do you know where the original comes from.

For the cost of an OEM - I pay about $115 out here for Home Premium and as I said for general use it is more that adequate. If you use Windows for business or a company then the Pro and Ultimate are best but they include features I personally would not use ever.

An option would b to buy a key and contact Microsoft for an activation code and then use that tutorial I sent - it is the "freshest" version you will get as it will have far more updates in place than a bought DVD would (less downloading after install).
You just need to follow the tutorial carefully and pick the right ISO make a bootable disk or stick and install.

Just as a friendly advice anyone found using pirated software particularly Windows on this forum is quickly banned as we all reckon for the cost of say an OEM it is a bit below the belt and not worth the risk of being found out - besides there are heavy penalties if you are found using pirated stuff and also they usually are prone to excessive problems.

I am not saying you are using such stuff but just be aware of that, plus you would not be the first to be caught and probably not the last and I would hate to think you have been take for a ride because there area lot of unscrupulous ratbags around mate who do this stuff for all sorts of reasons ie financial or just to be a ruddy pain to decent folks like yourself.

Please let me know how you get on.
John
