Solved BSOD and jraid.sys

System Hangs Before Login Screen-Intermittently

Had some problems with BSOD's.
Here's some of the data.

Also when I start the computer it skips the bios flash screen at times and then just hangs up with a blinking cursor doing nothing. If I start it again then it does show the bios screen and will continue to boot. At this time when it's booting the OS I will sometimes get the jraid.sys errors.

I'm running AHCI if that makes a difference, it was changed from IDE before the problem started, there were two places I changed it in the BIOS.
I changed a setting in the registry from 3 to 0 as directed by some posters below:

- run regedit.
- go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/CurrentControlSet/Services/Msahci
- right-click Start in the Name column, and then click Modify.
- In the Value data box, type 0, and then click OK.
- exit the registry editor.

Any help will be appreciated.

Tried to research some on my own.
I found the driver jraid.sys on my computer.

Also found the driver on the internet here's that one:
GIGABYTE SATA2 Preinstall driver (For AHCI / RAID Mode)
Note: Press F6 during Windows setup to read from floppy.

1.17.52.2 (10/29/2009) is what I have.

So I hit the upgrade button on that driver but W7 said it was up to date. It is supposed to look on the internet for the latest. Possible it couldn't find it but why put the update button if it doesn't work? Or did I miss something? Not sure if that's the problem anyway.

Here's the registry setting I changed:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Msahci

I set this to 0. Then went into bios and changed from IDE to AHCI in 2 places on the same screen.

The problem is only at startup so far, then works fine once logged in.

Added attachments.
Computer history.
Built last June, and was the only time installing W7(64 bit).
Had some problems, with motherboard(rev. 1) and had it replaced (rev. 2).
Replaced PSU as motherboard was not the problem, that problem resolved by replacing a bad PSU.

When the machine booted up I flashed the BIOS with the latest revision(F9, it's in my system profile).
Also changed from IDE to AHCI in 2 places in BIOS, before that I changed the registry as posted above, this was done as soon as the computer started working .
Changed my ram to specification.
Started getting BSOD's right away.
Checked CPU temps, OK.
No overclocking done.

Other problems:
When computer starts it skips the Bios slpash screen only sometimes and then goes to a blinking cursor and does nothing (maybe can't read HD?).
Sometimes it goes thru the BIOS and when loading windows I get the BSOD, alway the same one.
This doesn't happen all the time though.
If the computer goes all the way to the W7 start screen then no BSOD's occur and operates properly.

jraid.sys is the JMicron SATA controller driver; I'm thinking this may be as simple as a driver update. The drivers can be found here: ftp://driver.jmicron.com.tw/SATA_Controller/Windows/JMB36X_WinDrv_R1.17.62_WHQL.zip

See if that does the trick.

I did install the drivers, checked the jraid.sys and it did install.

Restarted the computer a number of times and didn't get the BSOD so tht looks good.

The other problem I had may be unrelated to the driver. When starting windows the BIOS flash screen doesn't always show up. After that, under normal startup up I get a message "loading the OS" and a blinking cursor under it for awhile and then the system will start.
Other times there won't be a message, just a blinking cursor and it won't do anything else unless I do a manual restart.

When I get the blinking cursor the BIOS flash screen may or may not show up.
Maybe a reinstall of W7 may work or could be other drivers are needed?

After some time looking around I made a few changes since I couldn't find much anywhere in my searches.

First changed some BIOS settings.
Though it seems unlikely, I changed the delay for the HDD from 5 to 0 seconds.
The problem seemed to be the BIOS wasn't booting every other time in most cases.

I found a setting that said for the BIOS not to load for all but the "keyboard errors" so then changed a USB to PS2 converter on my mouse to just the USB which is what my mouse has.
Restarted about 10-15 times and system didn't hang anymore.

Could have been when changing from IDE to AHCI the PS2 port generated an error which caused the BIOS to not load and left me with a blinking cursor, maybe a bug with the BIOS software?


I'll try it out for a few days...
I guess my problems are behind me hopefully with the jraid.sys BSOD resolved (Thanks to Jonathan) and this other weird problem.

If you are going to enable AHCI, be sure to enable it in Windows first; otherwise, you won't be able to boot.

Already changed to AHCI awhile back and used the procedure outlined.

I did some windows tests to see if any difference in speed metrics but all were the same. My enclosure has a place for just plugging in a HD, though I don't use it sometime in the future I may, that was one of the reasons I wanted AHCI installed.

Thanks for the latest drivers, there's so many that I'm not sure I have the right one even if I find it.

Thinking about it, the USB to PS/2 converter I used for the mouse is over 10 years old from another machine I had, probably is just bad and may have taken forever to find this problem from logs if there were any. Don't know if it could handle USB2.0 either as that didn't come out till around 2000 IIRC.
