Solved BSOD at random intervals when playing Rift

this has been bugging me for months, after a lot of trial and error i decided to ask for help here cause i am desperate on what is causing these bsod's,

it was fine for a long time and then suddenly i get none, one or two bsod's when playing the mmo Rift, i have played many other games without any issues but they were not as graphically intensive as Rift is, included are only 3 minidumps since i removed the previous ones as i thought it was fixed, but then the bsod's came back later on

things i have done so far:

windows memory test - nothing
memtest overnight - nothing
chkdsk /f /r - nothing
sfc /scannow - nothing
OCCT - GPU stresstest - vid mem test - nothing
furmark - eventually turned it off because my cards got too hot
uninstalling unnnecessary programs with revo uninstaller
cleaning the reg with cc cleaner
installing different vidcard drivers (after using driver fusion)
updating bios
updating ssd firmware
windows is being updated once a month
disabling services which are not needed
turning off power saving (or as close as it gets)
disabling all onboard devices in bios (including realtek onboard lan and removing its drivers with driver fusion, bought an intel nic instead)
disabling the microsoft 6to4 adapter, isatap adapter and teledo tunneling service in device manager
disabling high definition audio from nvidia in device manager

some things to add though, i downclock both my vidcards to stock speeds since they get too hot otherwise, now they stay at 75-80° when playing Rift, my memory timings match the recommended ocz timings including voltages (with command rate 2T, can take a screenshot of it if you need it), everything else is at stock speeds

at one point i thought it was Mumble (voice comm) causing it since i had to use a developer snapshot cause the stable version wouldnt run, later i learned that it was caused by a hook my firewall uses (outpost), so removed the hook since i dont use the service that uses it anyway (even though it still shows up in my eventvwr), installed the stable version of mumble without issues since, i disable the realtime protection of my avira antivirus while gaming, even whitelisted Rift in it

i seem to get the same 4-5 different bsod's throughout, after searching google for hours they all come back to the same standard steps to troubleshoot it, but no solution so far

i have tried running Driver Verifier as well, but not always, since it lags the game to a degree i cant be competitive in Rift during raids anymore when running it, and offcourse, the times it does run i dont get any bsod, and the times it didnt run a bsod pops up now and then, sometimes i go a week without one, sometimes its nearly every day, but i usually only get one, two is a rare exception

i saw some drivers being outdated, but not sure if its safe to update, or can be updated at all, hope its more clear to you than it is to me

wall of text i know :) but i try to share everything i have done/experienced so far (might have forgotten something, its been going on for a quite some time now), added the files from the tool

thank you for your time and effort

Hello Molochai, the MSINFO32 you uploaded is corrupt. You need to upload that file again.

  1. Click on the start button
  2. Type "msinfo32" (without quotes) in the search bar of the start menu, click the resulting link. It will open the System Information window.
  3. File>Save. In the "File Name" filed, put "MSINFO32" (without Quote), give the save location to desktop, and click the "save" button.
  4. Give the time for processing, it will save a .nfo file on your desktop.
  5. Zip it, and upload it following the instruction.

Unfortunately, still I cannot see the MSINFO32 file

But there is another way to bring the faulty drivers in front.
Driver Verifier - Enable and Disable

Run Driver Verifier for 24 hours or the occurrence of the next crash, whichever is earlier.

Let us know the results, with the subsequent crash dumps, if any.

hm strange indeed, if i try to open it after saving i get the same message (in dutch)

looked for updates to my usb devices, when i set my location to US on the logitech site, i see newer drivers for my mouse, if i set it to Belgium i see older drivers which i have now, you think i should uninstall the ones i have now and install the newer US ones? using english as a language for my mouse settings so its no problem to use them

will use driver verifier again tonight

Seen it.

Apparently there are two things you need to uninstall. Avira antivirus and Comodo firewall. They are known problem creator. use Microsoft Security Essentials - Free Antivirus for Windows with windows firewall and free MBAM as on demand scanner.

I think, Driver Verifier will be the best option for you. Let us see what it brings up. :)

shame i cant use avira anymore, paid for a 3-year plan, still valid till 2014, ah well, if it fixes my problems i dont see why i should still use it, will instal MS SE right away

that comodo you saw was a leftover reference to the startmenu from the comodo dragon browser (deleted it in the meantime), used that a while back but uninstalled the same day, currently using outpost as my firewall (also paid for it), not sure if its a known culprit?

as for mbam, used it a couple times before, but uninstalled it at some point (got paranoid and uninstalled everything i didnt really use much, will install again

but yea, will see how it goes with driver verifier, gonna be very laggy playing the game though :p

thanks for the fast replys btw

been running driver verifier since last night (playing the game for 3-4h in one go), no bsod's, uninstalled avira and got MS SE instead before running it, also noticed my game barely lags while DV is running, compared to when i ran it some time ago while avira was still installed, so far so good, can be pure luck though, will keep DV on

is there a reason why DV can be run for 24h max? or is it just when it doesnt find anything in that time there wont be anything to find after that time period and assume things are fixed?

DV is to run for a substantially long time. My assumption is 24 hours is a long time. Nothing more. Some of them like to run it for 36 hours.

And, DV makes the system laggy, for sure. As it is putting a stress on the drivers.

Let us know how DV performed.

it did crash the game 2 times while DV was running the 2nd day, but nothing got dumped and it didnt even show up in eventvwr, seems theres alot of people experiencing random crashes since one of the previous patches, all it does is pop the send error report from Rift itself and now way to tell why it crashed

played without DV and everything seemed fine

Nothing has been overclocked
If you have the knowledge that it is being caused by just a patcher, you may overlook it and expect that a coming patch will rectify it.

will do, some patches it never crashes (rift encountered and error..), other patches it crashes alot and lots of people get it randomly

also, i have to add, most of the time i had bsod's was when i alt tabbed out of the game a couple times before popping a bsod a hour or so later, not sure if that has to do anything with it cause the game works fine when getting back in, but i did that even more when DV when running and didnt seem to affect it, so might be just Avira that was being the culprit

cant play much this week, but will see how it goes over the next few weeks, will mark this as solved and in case a bsod pops back up ill come back

thank you for your time and effort, it is greatly appreciated!

Nothing has been overclocked
hello again, i think i found what was causing all these strange bsod's and game errors, since DV did not find a faulty driver i decided to look at the memory usage when i was playing Rift, and since i only had issues while playing this game, i found out i didnt have enough memory to keep up with in the first place, when i alt-tabbed out of the game it was showing 10-50mb of my 4GB that was available, and the longer you play the game, the bigger the cache seem to get

so i decided to buy new ram (8GB Corsair CMX8GX3M2A1333C9 dual channel) at the start of the week, and have been playing since without errors or bsod's (got 2 bsod's right before i bought them pointing at memory as usual), so i checked the ram usage again (source control or whatever the button is called in english in the Task manager under the performance tab), and it was showing 4.5GB of ram in use (with a couple of gigs that show "ready to use"; cache probably? and around 1.5GB available to use for whatever else), so the game never had enough memory to play with in the first place, and therefore probably caused all these weird issues

i knew Rift was quite a "heavy" game, but not this heavy :p came across someone with a similar issue that also had 4GB ram and solved it as well by putting more memory into his system, so thats what led me to trying this

thought i would let you know in case you come across another person that has similar issues
