My new laptop seems to be plagued with a BSOD problem. I tried to analyze the minidump and it talks about the

Probably caused by : atikmpag.sys

which seems to be a common issue

I have an AMD Raedon HD 7340 video card (display adapter in control panel shows this).
I have tried to update the drivers but windows update says they are at the latest version.

I am uploading my SF file as per instructions. This machine is a laptop (HP 2000 Notebook) and it is only 2 months old.

I noticed in other threads here that there is an issue with a file if it's from 2005 (ASACPI.sys from http://www.sevenforums.com/crashes-debugging/120166-bsod-atikmpag-sys.html) but that file does not exist on my system.

I should point out that I have let Windows Update do all it's updates .. the system recovery is on a USB stick so if I have to go back to factory I can but I hope there's another solution. I did get an email from HP about the issue but I don't seem to have saved it. If all I have to do is download the drivers, great, I can do that for sure but I'd rather have someone who's seen this before give me some guidance so I don't waste my time and yours.

Thanks

I think I found the problem; I disconnected my second monitor and let the laptop monitor do its thing having only the HDMI monitor externally connected. No BSODs yet..crossing fingers

ok..so i installed the new drivers. Does it take more power to drive an HDMI connected monitor than a VGA? If so, could I not just switch my flatscreen to be VGA and connect it that way?

To better help us to help you would you please add your systems specs? Here's how:SystemInfo See Your System Specs Under System Manufacturer/Model Number add whether it is a desktop or laptop and whether self built. Very important

Log in to Seven Forums and you will be able to transfer the info directly to the specs page in your profile from within the System Info app.

After doing this your specs will be available in each of your posts.
Click on My system Specs in the lower left of this post to see how it should look.:)
Full instructions are in the tutorial.

HDMI may want more power since it pushes audio and video signals, just a guess.
Check the BIOS to see if it has a setting for which GPU to use first, the onboard or the 7340.

No dice

Not sure what happened to my first reply but installing the drivers did not fix the problem. I downloaded the apps that were suggested and updated my sys info. I am running the VMT now but the FurMark application aborted so not sure what to do about that. I think my next step should be to boot into safe mode and do a memory test.

doing the vmt test now.. started it in continuous mode last night with only my laptop monitor and an external VGA. 4 tests thus far, no errors. I will let it do 20 tests and report back any errors. There must be a log I can send up here so I'll find it and send it once 20 tests are done. Then I'll do a mem test.

17 tests passes thus far and no errors. I wonder if having just the external smallish VGA connection will do the trick.

i let it go for 20 passes and had no errors so I stopped it. There is now just the laptop monitor and a VGA connected external monitor (small) and I have seen no BSOD. If this good behavior continues, I will switch my large screen to VGA and hook it back up since I like the big screen. If that action produces no BSOB after 2 or 3 days, I will mark this closed because it would seem that the fault lies with the HDMI output... I think that's a safe assumption
