Solved BSOD at random, usually upon closing laptop

Although I've seen the dreaded blue screen a few times, this usually occurs after I close the lid to my laptop (the normal setting is to go into sleep mode at this point). In these cases, I open the computer up to a warning that my system was not shut down properly and get a system message telling me about the bluescreen memory dump upon logging in.

The SF Diagnostic Tool file is attached below

hmm

Most of the bsod are caused by your Ralink Wifi Adapter ... not sure how you got that driver version ... it shows as version 5.0.9.0 ..... whereas the official HP Pavilion dv6-6135dx ( hope this is the model you are using .. got it as per you dump file ).... driver for Ralink is at 3.2.2.0 (dated 2011)...

I would suggest you roll back the drivers or install the HP supported one !

I do indeed have dv6-6135dx. I installed the new driver. I'll see if this fixes the problem.

Out of curiosity, how do you diagnose these problems? If it's not too complicated, I'd like to learn, so that I can fix problems like this on my own if problems come up later

Hi

We usually diagnose the dump file using Windows Debugger. Its not a tough nut to crack ....but if you do have some knowledge in programming in C or C++ and do read up lots of info on the windows internals.. You should be able to crack it ;)

To get an idea.. Look here .. You would get an idea... though those are advanced ..

Sorry about that! I looked at the link you showed me; that's too complicated for me. I wanted to give it a week or so to make sure the problem was fixed. It's only partially fixed.

Although closing the laptop no longer causes a BSOD, it still randomly blue screens from time to time. I'm not sure what causes this. You said before that MOST of the BSOD's were caused by my RaLink driver. What were the rest caused by?

It looks like the driver has not been changed... it still shows the previous version... and you did say you had BSOD ... but the last dump file i can see is dated on 18th ???

That's strange. I took a look at the driver again; it is indeed 5.0.9. It must have reverted after I used the HP Update tool. It's strange that I can't trust HP's own software to provide the right driver.

I've installed DriverMax and used it to find the latest version of the Ralink driver (as well as a bunch of other ones). According to DriverMax, the latest supported update is 5.0.5. This is different than the version you suggested, but this seems to have stopped the bluescreens from occurring again. Is it possible that the version you suggested (3.2.2.0) was just what came with the computer? All of the drivers in your link are from 2011.

I'm not sure why the more recent BSOD's don't come up in the file. Perhaps the computer didn't bluescreen those times but improperly shut down in some other way? In any case, I'll run the utility one more time and attach the results. Maybe that will do it

Please stop using drivermax to update your drivers !!!! You are calling for more trouble than getting the latest

You may use it for backing up the drivers but never to update it. !!

There is a reason why each manufacturer has their own set of drivers.. they update them based on the feedback they get from customers and internal testing.. even if the version is dated in 2011 !!..

There are certain drivers like Graphics card that can be update from the respective chip manufacturer (Nvidia or ATI) even if they come from different partners.

If what i say is not enough.... look at the dump file date 30/6/2013.... look at the drivers marked in red

Got it. I'll uninstall drivermax. Will installing the Ralink driver version 3.2.2.0 solve this once and for all then? Was this what caused all of the BSOD's?

Update:

I'm still getting the BSOD. I've confirmed that my Ralink driver is indeed version 3.2.2.0.

This time, from what I can gather, using windows debugger, the crash points to a file called "RT2860." The only information I can find on this is that it refers to a wireless adaptor by Ralink... that I don't have. Is this anything close to right? What should I do about it?

I've attached the latest SF log:

Upon further snooping in the device manager, it seems that RT2860.sys is the location of the 3.2.2.0 version driver for the Ralink adapter. Does this mean that my newly-installed driver doesn't work either?

The RT2860 is your Ralink Wifi driver.... Its correct.

All right next in line is the Firewall.. Please uninstall Kaspersky Internet Security 2013 and use MSE and the windows firewall for most of your needs. The NDIS drivers of these are known to cause issue

Then uninstall Demon tool Pro..

Restart your system and let me know when it crashes
