BSOD at unexpected times, error 0x00000f4

Hi People,

I am having a problem with my dell XPS, (windows 7 home premium) my laptop has never failed me before in the 4 years i have had it.
Right now, the problem is this:
day 1, laptop suddenly showed bluescreen, i restarted, ran start up problem solving thing, laptop worked again
Day 2, Laptop did not start up, quick bluescreen on startup, ran hard drive check, laptop worked for 2 hours then bluescreen again
Day 3 (now, laptop is working after trying restarting several times. system will probably show bluescreen again in a few hours.

I have got the log collector files (see attached)
I am very desperate to get my laptop working again. any help would be highly appreciated.

The only one crash dump present in the zip is not a stop 0xF4 one, but a stop 0xA.

It was caused by Avast. To deal with it, you need to uninstall Avast using Avast Uninstall Utility. Use Microsoft Security Essentials as your antivirus with windows inbuilt firewall, and free MBAM as the on demand scanner.

A stop 0xF4 is basically a storage related error, and that might be caused by the storage filter by Avast alongwith some other reasons. So after uninstalling Avast see how it goes. Report us for any further BSOD. We will take the necessary steps depending on the situation.

We already mentioned about some other reasons. Let us check them one by one, OK?

First, uninstall Virtual CloneDrive. The SCSI adapter installed by it may cause such an issue.

Next, let us check the HDD itself. Test your HDD using Seatools.

Take both the short generic and long generic tests.

Let us know the results.

Also, try to observe if the BSOD tends to occur during wake up from sleep, or at any random time.

Thanks for the quick reply, I will try it out now.

I have noticed that bluescreens tend to come after I have used my laptop for a while, both of the times it was during a youtube video. Don't know if that is a coincidence or not.

The point is noted, and actions (if needed, depending on the HDD test) will be suggested after seeing the HDD test result.

Hi, i tried to run the tests but my laptop won't stay working long enough for the long generic test.
The short one came out with a pass.

What happens when you are running the long generic test?

There is a DOS version of the test. That DOS version will run outside of windows by booting to the test directly. Give it a try?

I will give it a go tomorrow. my system is actually working at the moment so maybe it worked afterall.

Believe it.

Your hard disc is failing.

Still, run the long generic using Seatools for DOS and attempt the repair after the end of the test. If the dis is repaired there, it will give you some more days to copy your files elsewhere. But it the repaid does not work, get a new disc.

I was afraid of that. Will try it out but I am going to look for a new laptop anyway, hate it if I cannot fully rely on my laptop for work so..
