Hi,

I realize this is a windows7 forum, but thought I'd give it an attempt anyway. Thanks for your inputs!

Situation:
Newly reformatted computer with Windows Vista Business 32 bit. Windows update completed; everything updated including SP2.

Problem:
When I install the AMD drivers for my radeon 7850 I get BSOD 0x00000116 (atikmpag.sys) when rebooting the computer. Here is the driver I am trying to install

http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/desktop?os=Windows+Vista+-+32

I have attached my minidump.

Hope someone can help. Thanks in advance,

Best,
ZenoDK

Hello and welcome Zenodek mate there used to be a sister Vista forum but not available that I can see of but the dump shows an issue with the graphics driver as you know.

The usual suggested fix for this is to uninstall the Catalyst Control Centre and just run the driver for the device itself. Now I had a scour around and can only get the CCC which I can only suggest you uninstall and then use that support site to self detect the driver for that GPU if that does not work then try the CCC again maybe it was just a bad download you had.

Now an option that I use when everything else seems to be failing is to use a software called Slim Drivers
Slimware Utilities - Download SlimDrivers FREE and let it run.

But before you do anything with it please install Unchecky Unchecky - Keeps your checkboxes clear it will stop those nasty often missed add ons that come with certain softwares and make sure Slim Drivers is the only thing to download just take it slowly. When you have finished with that software - uninstall it because it will nag and nag you and just as a tip I always check in the registry to see if it has all been removed to be sure. Anyway this is usually good at removing it all
Download Revo Uninstaller Freeware - Free and Full Download - Uninstall software, remove programs, solve uninstall problems

Lastly it would have been good to have the machines specs mate even though it is a Vista machine
System Info - See Your System Specs

Thanks a lot for the reply.

I tried:
1) Uninstall Catalyst Control Center: I did not have it installed, so that was not the problem

2) Install Slimware: I did, and it found an older driver that I tried to install. It did not work, the system still says "Standard VGA card" after installing.

I have now updated my user profile with my machine specs. I entered the graphics card manually, as it still says "Standard VGA card" in my device manager.

Any other suggestions? Thanks a lot for the help on this!

Ok well try this driver for that card - if it is not the one you installed Desktop
Am wondering how you updated that driver because the Windows driver update feature is not particularly good.

Hi,

Thanks again for responding so fast.

Now I tried to:
1) Install the driver suggested by Slimware, which did not cause any change. After that, I installed the driver from AMD (Desktop). This time I did not get BSOD, but instead windows loaded so far that I could see the Windows logo, but then once it was about to open the desktop, then the screen just turned black and stayed black. Not sure how to solve that one?

2) I also tried the driver suggested below for Windows7. That one would not install at all. I got the error message "AMD installationmanager: Installation manager failed to initialize" and "Installation manager failed to initialize package manager"

Do you think this can be related to any of these two things?
1) Running an ancient Windows XP 32 bit on a 64 bit machine? In other words; do you think it would help to just purchase windows 10 64 bit?
2) The graphics card having a hardware error?

Any suggestions are highly appreciated.... thanks guys!

Ok mate from what I can see the machine can support 10 and frankly I would get a new 7 Pro or 10 Pro OEM
Gigabyte Tecohnology Co., Ltd. H61M-S2PVwww.gigabyte.com.au/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4065#dl

I would also start with a new drive and now is the chance to get a SSD into that machine but it is your budget and it would at least get away from the problems you have now.

Personally I went over to NVidia because of the problems i had with AMD graphics but again your budget however for a very reasonable price and if you do not want really high end gaming stuff then this
ASUS GeForce GTX 750 Ti OC 2GB is a very nice little unit.

Now speaking in terms of money out here the 500GB SSD, the 10 OEM and that GPU woulds set me back
around $600.

I was very anti 10 but now the shambles that was going on with the upgrades has died down I find it really much faster than 7 and can be configured as you like it - mind you the 7 is still the easiest to use but sadly seems to be losing ground to 10.
