BSOD: cdd.dll Kernel-Power error while using graphics-heavy apps

I get a BSOD while doing pretty much anything graphics intensive... Before my most recent fresh install of Windows 7, it used to happen while playing games (occasionally while playing StarCraft II or Half-Life 2: Episode 2) but it now is starting to occur (after the fresh install) more frequently and has spread to programs like After Effects. I started to get graphics glitches while rendering a composition (which spread to other programs like Firefox) followed by a BSOD listing the cdd.dll file to blame.

My event viewer states that there have been 3 BSOD's since I've reformatted all linked to a "Kernel-Power" error. I have no idea what this is.

I am hoping this is not a hardware issue, as I don't have the money to replace my video card on a yearly basis.

Help computa :(

Im going to call in the reserves on this one... it points to adf.sys and cdd.sys. neither of which I can find out much about... but it does mention that steam was involved at the time of the crashes... be patient, we'll get to the bottom of it as soon as possible... ;)

BLESS YOU! I have just installed older video drivers (from July) to see if that corrects the more extreme of the problems, however, I was getting similar cdd.dll (and some other ones that don't mention any driver at all) BEFORE the new video drivers were installed.

Hi,

Graphics drivers blamed in 2 out of 3 crashes, however they appear to be fully up to date. Therefore hardware failure is a possibility.

Video Card stress test - http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/100356-video-card-stress-test-furmark.html

Also your networking driver needs updating:
Code:
[font=lucida console][B]nvm62x32.sys[/B] Sat Oct 18 10:00:39 [COLOR=Red][B]2008[/B][/COLOR] (48F8FCF7)[/font]

You should be able to find an update from your motherboard manufacturer's website.

Regards,
Reventon

Downloading the 10/2009 nForce 430 drivers directly from Nvidia (latest and last driver released for my networking chip, as they seem to have stopped supporting it). I think a new motherboard may be in order if all of my drivers are no longer being maintained and supported by the chipset manufacturers.

I installed prior Nvidia drivers for my GPU and the graphical glitches/errors appear to have stopped. They were particularly prevalent in After Effects.

I will do a video stress test as well.

Would you guys recommend I do a test on my memory and my HDD? Could they cause these types of errors? I just want a healthy PC. I hate when stuff like this happens.

Thank you for your help!

Do the video stress first, if that comes back ok, then you can do the other tests just to eliminate any doubts...

Got yet another BSOD 10 mins ago.

Before this happened, I used a driver cleaner software (driver sweeper) to remove any old NVIDIA drivers that may have lingered, then installed fresh new drivers, I let MEMTEST run overnight and had no errors, installed the most recent nForce 430 drivers, and ran Fur Mark for like 10 minutes with no problems (even turned on displacement, etc). However, the card did get rather hot, up to 89C max. The stock cooler isn't very good.

I have attached a dump file to see if you guys can look at it and see what may be the problem. Thanks again for your help.

Hi,

I believe this is the problem -
Code:
[font=lucida console][B]ATITool.sys[/B]  Sat Nov 11 02:08:51 [COLOR=Red][B]2006[/B][/COLOR] (455479E3)[/font]

This driver is part of this application - ATITool - Overclocking utility for ATI and NVIDIA cards

You should uninstall this. Use Revo Uninstaller - Download Revo Uninstaller Freeware - Free and Full Download - Uninstall software, remove programs, solve uninstall problems

Regards
