I have a five month old Acer Aspire 5742Z running Windows 7 Home Premium. As soon as I bought it I burned the Image files to 3 disks and also made a System Repair disk. Yesterday it refused to boot and by switching off "auto restart" I managed to get the message "UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME" stop: 0X000000ed (0XFFFFFA80051a8940,0XFFFFFFFFC0000185,0X0000000000000000,0X0000000000000000)

I have changed the bios so that the CD/DVD is the first to boot and have tried both the system repair disk and the image disks but cannot repair the fault. Currently it has frozen at the blue screen but also displaying the System Recovery Options window that reads:- Operating System = Windows 7 Partition Size = 0MB Location = (D:) Local Disk.

I will be most grateful for any assistance. As this laptop is only used by my wife to play card games would this machine run Win2k Pro as I have an installation disk for this operating system.

Many thanks.

Are you able to create a cd on another computer?

Try download Ultimate Boot CD - Overview and burn it to a disk and then boot to it. Run hard drive scans/tests and see if it can fix the drive. If it can't and you're still getting errors then I would try replacing the drive. Since you just purchased it, you might still be under warranty.

I have installed Ultimate Boot CD but when trying to "build" it asks for the path to the O/S files which I do not have for Windows 7. Is this corect?

Not sure about that. I didn't think it needed OS files but I may be mistaken.

If you can't get that to work then look here and try burning a bootable hard drive checker

BSOD Crash

Hi. I have installed Win2k on an external HD and set the Bios to load Windows from that drive. It crashes at the same point as Windows 7. I guess that proves the internal HD is OK but it doesn't help solve the problem. I think the next step is to return it under warranty.

Thank you very much for your kind assistance.
