BSOD due to Atikmpag.sys and infinite loop of display drivers!

Greetings,

I've been getting several BSOD's while playing GPU intensive games such as SWTOR. It really wasn't an issue since I've only been getting 1-2 BSOD's every month or so, but up until a few days ago, it's gotten much, much worse.

As usual, as I was playing SWTOR, my laptop suddenly froze up and then the BSOD came up indicating there was an infinite loop of the display drivers. I just thought it was one of the very few blue screens I would suffer for this month, so I restarted the system.

However, as the desktop was booting back up, about a minute into the process, the laptop froze up and then I experienced yet another BSOD, but this one was different - It indicated that the Atikmpag.sys was faulty or what not and resetting the display driver was not possible.

Now, every time I restart the laptop, I would always get either the atikmpag.sys or infinite loop of the display drivers BSOD 1-2 minutes in, and I can't figure out the issue. The laptop would always freeze up right before it gets a blue screen. Sometimes, after freezing up, it would just restart without any sort of a BSOD.

I've already re-installed the display drivers, messed around with the page file, reset the BIOS settings to default, attempted to update the drivers themselves, but that ultimately failed as I had to preform a system restore since I couldn't boot windows up.

Is there anything more I can do? Please look at the attachment for more info regarding my system. Thanks!

Regards,
MrCode

Just to update you on the situation, after uninstalling all those programs, it seems that the problem was fixed temporarily.

Is it possible to continue using this thread for future reference just in case I get more BSOD's?

Thanks!

So long as you don't reply to this thread months after the last post, because that would eventually result in a loss of overview.

So I was just browsing the web one day, and I got the same display driver loop BSOD yet again.

Is there any way to diagnose the problem? Should I post the event log for the most recent BSOD?

Thanks.

Hello again!

Yet again, I experienced another BSOD indicating that my driver was doing the whole loop thing again, but this time, my laptop won't even boot up - it just stays idle in the windows logo screen then restarts itself.

I tried doing the windows startup repair as well as system restore, but none of these have helped.

The only way to access windows is via safe mode at the moment. Please help!

Thanks.

MrCode

It's about 5 yrs old, so it's getting there.

I just want to get it fixed temporarily before I get a newer one.

Also, the IObit smart defrag is still running while I boot up the computer, even though the program has been uninstalled, so would that be a problem at all?

There is the possibility that left behind files, or files that couldn't be deleted, are running.

Once you have used IObit (any program) you are in a world of hurt.

Many have had to do a Clean Install just to get completely away from anything IObit.

Well, I shutdown my laptop for a few hours then turned it back again in hopes that it might start running again, and it did.

Is there any other way to remove any remnants of the IObit files other than doing a clean install of windows?

It seems that SmartDefragDriver.sys is still lingering within my system. Is there a safe way of removing this?

Thanks.

P.S. - Ok, after browsing the internet for a few mins, the laptop once again decided to restart on its own, and yet again, the laptop can't get past the windows logo without restarting.

:(

You may be able to use Revo Uninstaller to scan for any files related to IObit and remove them.

Be aware, it may include the registry too. Careful scan the list Revo provides before performing any actions. If you're not sure about the list upload a photo or screenshot of the list.

As mentioned already, I've already installed all IObit related software; it's just that the SmartDefragDriver.sys is still there and may be causing problems.

The Revo Uninstaller cannot find any programs that are related to IObit.

Ok, I found a way to delete the file.

I reinstalled a fresh set of drivers, but the problem is still existent. Every time I restart the laptop, it would just sit there on the windows logo screen then restart again.

However, if I uninstall the drivers completely and try to boot the computer up again, it works. It seems like there's an issue with the display drivers or the software itself.

I would appreciate further assistance, please.

I forgot that the functionality required for left behind removal, after the program has already been removed, is only available in the Pro version :o

As Layback Bear has said, your best shot is a clean install.

I've been trying desperately to find my windows CD, but it's been no use. :(

I guess I'll need to take this laptop to a good friend that has a win7 copy or to a repair shop.

Ok, I got my hands on a full version of win7 iso.

Is there a safe ISO program which I can use to mount and run the windows repair/installation?

Thanks.
