BSOD during Installation

Hello everyone,

This is my first post on these forums, and hopefully you guys can point me in the right direction.

I downloaded the 64-bit version of W7 beta and set up my HD with 2 partitions, one for Vista x64, and an 80gb partition for W7. From inside Vista I started the installation by mounting the image and started setup. After setup finishes copying files it then goes to the next step which was extracting files, it gets to 20% then the computer restarts to continue with the installation. So far, so good... Then it says Starting Windows and has the new loading glassy bar, then all the sudden I get a BSOD with a "stop error" of some sort that has something to this effect "0x00000007" and some info after that but nothing specific as to what the problem is. It wasn't just a fluke, i've tried several times, and everytime it does the same thing.

I've thought about burning the ISO and installing from DVD and seeing if I have better luck that way. Also, maybe I downloaded a bad torrent? Is there any way to check the integrity of an ISO to make sure everything is ok with it? If anyone has any suggestions or has ran into this please advise.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the reply Bare Foot, I've been doing research on this like a mad man, I really wanna try W7. I checked out your link, I can't really make much of it to be honest. As I was reading other users posts, I came across one from frankzappa77, he was getting a BSOD during installation also. He used the GParted disk to set the partitions (as did I) and he ended up using the GParted from within Linux. Luckily I have a Ubuntu Live Cd that I can boot into and hopefully I can use the GParted in there. The only thing that I couldn't figure out from his post was, after he set up the partitions from within Linux, if he left his W7 partition raw or if he set it to NTFS. When I tried leaving mine raw with no file system W7 setup didn't even detect it being there and it wouldn't let me install. If anyone else has suggestions, keep 'em coming! Please. When I get home from work, I will try them all!

Thanks Again

BTW Bare Foot...nice computer specs. Do you play any games?

Hi emartinez13

Not sure if the old 4GB memory problems that effected Vista apply to Windows 7 but you may want to try removing 2GB of RAM from your machine just for the installation.

if the install goes OK you can re-install and run without problems - just the installer that had some problems with 4GB of installed RAM

Hope this helps

As for the partitioning you could try creating the partition but not formatting it then point the installer to the new partition, and let the installer format it,

TIP. when you create the partition give it a nice easy name so you get the right one in the installer LOL

Hi Barman58,

Thanks for your reply, I did look into the possibility of the 4gb memory problem, weird thing is though, Vista x64 didn't have a problem when installing with them all in place. Oh well, seeing as W7 is still in beta, it could be an issue and i'm willing to give it a try. I'm almost positive it's going to end up being some kind of partition problem, just have to play around with it when I get home.

Hi,
if you have a vista install on another partition on the same machine you may want to partition and format from within vista ready for the install from the DVD. that way the version of NTFS should be the same - sometimes I've seen slight variations with Gparted dependent on the version used. Can't say what the latest is like as I've been using Paragon from within Vista recently.

You may be able to check the contents of the RAR download using 7zip,s built in checker

Barman58,

Yeah, I do have a Vista partition on the same drive that i'm trying to install Seven on. I think you might be on to something, i'm thinking that gparted might be part of the problem with the way it formats to ntfs, I don't know for sure. I was searching last night for a freeware disk partition editor that I could use to do my partitioning from within Vista but couldn't find one. Do you know of any? Or does vista have the capability without a 3rd party app?

Hi,
Vista has some disk management built in, right click Computer - select manage and then Disk management. It is a bit limited though, so you may want to check out this ...

Boot Manager, Partition Manager, and Drive Image Utility - BootIt Next Generation

Have not used it myself but have heard good comments on it from people who's opinion I value

Seems to tick all the boxes as it's Vista x64 compatible :D not free but 30 day trial should be enough ;)

If you are in the UK you may want to google Paragon Hard disk manager 8.5SE which may still be free (UK only) and is the software I use

Finally!!!

OK, I am now typing this from within W7! I like it so far! I just want to say thanks to Bare Foot Kid and Barman58 for your help and replies. In case anyone reads this in the future, what I did to fix it was; I burned the ISO to DVD and booted with the DVD, then just went on through the normal installation process and formatted the partition from within setup. Simple as that. Thanks guys!
