BSOD during Skyrim, possibly overheating?

Hello,
Just lately my computer has been struggling to play Skyrim, Assassin's Creed: Revelations and other recent(ish) releases. It usually crashes 20-30 minutes in, however reducing the resolution of the game (down from 1920x1080) or playing in a window seems to extend the time I can get before a crash. Additionally, not all the time does my computer even get to the blue screen, it often freezes, becoming totally unresponsive to any commands, whilst playing a loud buzzing sound, requiring a manual restart. As the title suggests, I'm not sure if it's simply overheating, or if it's something more.
Currently, my specifications are:
Windows 7 Ultimatex64
6 GB RAM
AMD Phenonm II x4 965 3.40 GHz
Nvidia GeForce GTX 560 Ti

Hi.


Do you have installed in your system the Exper tool?


Gainward :: Download


If yes,and you had make any adjustment using this software,first set everything back to default settings then uninstall it.


Remove avg from your system.


Download and install http://www.microsoft.com/security/pc-security/mse.aspx with windows firewall enable.


Finish and post back.

I did both of those steps and so far it's been working without a single issue (many more hours of gameplay than usual and not as much heat), thanks so much; the perfect christmas present .

I've smashed out a fair amount of hours since, without any problems, although my brother said it crashed today when he was playing skyrim (i was out all day) however I'm not sure if it's the same issue or not; I can't find any new bluescreen dumps. He's quite a bit younger and only fairly new to computers and whatnot so i couldn't really suss out what went wrong, could be nothing.

If the crash happens only skyrim then it may be a game issue.

If you have crashes generally playing any game then things change.

And again we have to give it time.

Over the last couple of days I've tried a couple of other games:
I had a crash and forced reboot during Dawn of War 2, as well as Borderlands (whilst lan-ing with a friend), so i'm guessing that Skyrim isn't the culprit? (the sole one at least anyway).

In this order,

Run http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker.html run it 2-2 times if needed to "fix" everything.

Run http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/433-disk-check.html
Check the Automatically fix file system errors box. (See screenshot below step
Check the Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors box.

Run http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/105647-ram-test-memtest86.html
Let it run until at least 7 passes are completed, or errors are found (whichever comes first). The longer you run it, the better.

Leave the test running for up to 2 hours, unless errors occur sooner. Errors will show up by one or more of the workers stopping.
Keep an eye on your temperatures, and stop the test if the machine starts to overheat.

So a bit of an update:
SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker came up with no errors.

Disk checking came up with quite a bit, took several hours to complete.

RamTest came up with no errors as well, got into the 8th pass(having left it overnight)

The two OOCT test results have been attached as zip files

I'll do the hardware stress test tomorrow most likely; i'll be away from the computer for the rest of the night.

I experimented a little with the Gainward expert tool months ago when i first got the computer; but I've already restored that to default and uninstalled as per your prior instructions. Other than that I haven't over clocked anything (the shop i got it from wouldn't of pre-set it to over clock would they?).

I ended up starting the stress test last night, it was a really hot night, the room was really humid (the air conditioner broke last week :/), after about 5-10 minutes the computer started beeping and whatnot so i stopped the test pretty hastily - it was quite hot to touch so i shut down and let it chill.

Today I did the test again on a much cooler day, it ran for about 2.5 hours without any of the beeping and all workers were going fine without any errors.

I've had one a couple of days ago during SWtOR but no dumpfile was left.

It may be of interest to you both since SWTOR is on the crashing computer.

Thanks writhziden, an interesting read. However I was having issues with the bsod well before I installed SWtOR, although I suppose it is possible it has augmenting the problem.
