Toshiba laptop - windows 7 64bit.
For a while now my USB devices (cameras, mp3 player) were not being recognized by the computer, and it would not allow me to install the necessary drivers citing lack of digital signature, etc. My usb mouse and usb memory stick were working fine. In attempting to follow the solutions offered around the internet, I tried to reinstall the User-mode driver framework service, the BSOD occured not immediately, but after several restarts. Around the same time I started getting pop-ups that windows could not be authenticated. I don't know if either of these are related.

Startup repair states root cause: "The operating system version is incompatible with Startup Repair"
Before the BSOD loop I was able to run a virus scan, with no viruses found.
Chkdsk ran for 24 hours and found no errors, however did not produce a log file.
System restore does not work to any previous point.
Boot from safe mode is not available.
Booting from a system recovery USB (http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/2083-system-repair-disc-create.html) opened the system recovery options, but these did not help.

I don't have the original install cd available, and have un-backupped files on the hd that I would like to preserve. I'm not a computer expert, so any help is much appreciated! Thank you in advance.

First I would suggest you run these scanners

Scan with Kaspersky TDSSKiller:
Anti-rootkit utility TDSSKiller
Anti-rootkit utility TDSSKiller
ESET online scanner:
Free Virus Scan | Online Virus Scanner from ESET
Free Online Virus Scanner | ESET

Also Download and install Superantispyware Free SUPERAntiSpyware - Downloads and run a full scan with it.

Also please go to your motherboard's web site for your board and install the most current chipset drivers.

Do you have SP1 installed? If so, most of the system repair disk functions will not work with a pre SP1 repair disk. It needs to be a post SP1 repair disk.

Please upload the BSOD Posting Instructions http://www.sevenforums.com/bsod-help-support/96879-blue-screen-death-bsod-posting-instructions.html. Upload the files here, this will tell you how. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/9733-screenshots-files-upload-post-seven-forums.html

essenbe, thank you for your reply.

Unfortunately I'm not able to execute any of your suggestions, because I'm not able to load windows past the startup repair screen.
I'm able to access command prompt, so I was using notepad from the command prompt to backup my files to a usb. If there is a way to run a virus scan from a usb without loading windows?

I do think it's SP1.

Yes, anyone who has the same version of Windows X64 as you can make you a repair disk. If you have an installation disk which is SP1, you could use that too. I am not sure how you are accessing the command prompt and using notepad to recover your files. If you have the installation disk, you can copy/paste from the recovery console, http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/93347-copy-paste-windows-recovery-console.html. You can also do it from a Live Linux CD. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/287439-emergency-kit-save-your-files-dead-os.html. This one uses Linux Mate simply because it is fairly simple to figure out for someone who only knows Windows, but any version of a Linux live CD can do it.

That's the longest way possible, I think. To do what he's doing you must have an installation disk. Go straight like you were installing, until you see load drivers, just like he had but didn't click on it. Once you do that, it will show you every drive connected. You can simply copy from one and paste to another. That is all explained in the link I gave you above. He went straight past the easy way.

DO you have an installation disk?

I obtained two different repair disks (no, I didn't have one at the time of original post), neither was able to repair my computer, however one generated the following Problem signature:

Problem Event Name: StartupRepairOffline
Problem Signature 01: 0.0.0.0
Problem Signature 02: 6.1.7600.16385
Problem Signature 03: unknown
Problem Signature 04: 51
Problem Signature 05: ExternalMedia
Problem Signature 06: 1
Problem Signature 07: OsVersionMismatch
OS Version: 6.1.7600.2.0.0.256.1
Locale ID: 1033

In addition, every startup repair states (regardless of DVD, USB or internal) the following;

Root cause found: The operating system version is incompatible with Startup Repair.
