Hello, getting frequent crashes that seem to point towards display problems. I have tried a few different driver versions, but it did not solve the issue.

I ran memtest for 5~ hours, came back with 0 errors.

There does not seem to be a specific issue causing them but it usually happens either when playing video games or watching videos, both offline and online, such as youtube or twitch.tv

Another fact of note is about 2 weeks ago I had a RAM issue that was also causing BSOD, that time memtest found thousands of errors and removing 1 of the RAM chips fixed the issue.

Strange thing happened. I played Rift for 2~ hours without any crashes, then exited the game, opened firefox (more specifically this exact forum) and it crashed with seemingly the same error, but I'll attach this dump file just in case.

While the game was running, the gpu temperature was around 60~65. Combined with the fact that it crashed after it was closed should rule out overheating/dust issues, right?

GPU: OCCT for 1 hour and GPU: MEMTEST 8 passes came out clean, no errors.

Currently v269.03. I'm aware that they're very old, but thought I'd try them anyway, as that's what the Dell site suggests for my laptop. I've also tried the newest ones v332.21 as well as slightly older v327.23.

Did not seem make a difference, but if it matters at all, v327.23 did last a few days without any crashes until it started crashing again.

WinDBG still highlights a video problem - its not exactly a driver issue, simply the card restting itself for some reason. At this stage, the only thing I can suggest is to double-check the cleanliness of the card (no dust etc.) andto ensure it gets adequate cooling (try removing a panel from the side of the case to ensure adequate airflow).

So I had the dust cleaned professionally but the next day it crashed again. Dump report looks the same as before but I'll attach it anyway.

Is there an easy way to check that? I don't really want to dig inside my laptop with my clumsy inexperienced hands

Tried disabling aero but crashed again.

Just to add more information, this laptop worked fine for the last 1.5 years, nothing has changed during that time in terms of hardware or general conditions, like where it was plugged in and kept. I first noticed some problems after I decided to reinstall windows in December, there were problems with updates and it started to frequently crash with BSOD. I brought it to a technician and he said that all that was wrong was 1 of the ram chips was busted. After it was removed, all the main problems were solved but occasionally it would still crash and the rest I posted on this thread already.

Is it possible that while the tech guy was disassembling the laptop he screwed up my graphics card somehow? Would just getting a new card, perhaps an AMD, likely fix these crashes?

Just to reiterate, these crashes are more common during low resource usage rather than high. It will rarely crash during high usage (such as running a video game), but then after the high usage (closing said video game), it will crash shortly after about 1 in 10 times.


I ran a diagnostic test from the boot menu and it found a problem with my battery, saying that "Your battery is reaching the end of it's usable life". As I understand this is just a warning that it might need replacement soon, but could it have something to do with the BSODs ?

Well I don't think that's idle by definition. To clear it up a bit, I'm staring at the HWmonitor right now with only my firefox browser opened, not doing anything else, and the temperatures stay within 50-55 degree range. When I first opened HWmonitor right after a pc restart I saw a few momentary spikes to 65+ though, hence the max values.
