BSOD happening randomly, error code 0x0000007a

This has been really annoying for me, as I just do not know when the next BSOD will happen because its so random.

Sometimes I have been playing games, sometimes just web browsing, and even sometimes not doing anything. Too make this worse, I can have it happen twice, or three times in an hour, yet then not have another BSOD happen for another week/month.

I could just start splashing some cash replacing parts one by one, but this would be very time consuming if the only way I can see if the BSOD issues has been solved, is by not seeing another BSOD (Considering its not a specific activity that is causing it)! Especially if its like usual when it doesn't happen for a month or more.

Hopefully I can get some help.

Start up

Keep less stuff at the start-up. Only anti-virus, this helps avoid driver conflicts and improves time to log in to windows.

Hard Drive/Storage

Post disk summary using CrystalDiskInfo software: CrystalDiskInfo Standard Edition

Make a hard drive test from the hard drive manufacturers website: Hard Drive Diagnostic Procedure

For errors on your Hard drive(s): How to Run Disk Check in Windows 7

SFC /scannow to check windows for corruption:

1. Click Start

2. In the search box, type Command Prompt
3. In the list that appears, right-click on cmd.exe and choose Run as administrator
4. In the command window that opens, type

sfc /scannow

and hit enter.

Memtest86+

Run Memtest86+ for at least 8-10 passes. It may take up to 20 passes to find problems. Make sure to run it once after the system has been on for a few hours and is warm, and then also run it again when the system has been off for a few hours and is cold.    Note

Pay close attention to part 3 of the tutorial in order to rule the faulty RAM stick out.

   Tip

Do this test overnight.

Thanks for the response, I will start doing these things suggested on Friday. Not keen on leaving my PC on over night, so I will leave it running all Friday until its finished.

I have just started the Memtest. Not keen on leaving my pc on over nights, but I will do if its nowhere near 5-7 passes.

I have briefly tried one of my hard drive diagnostic tools too, for my OCZ SSD but with no luck. It did say something on the website that the exe version will only work for certain drives so I need to try the bootable version somehow, burning to disk? Not sure if I will be able to use a virtual mounting program.

Hopefully be able to start ruling out some things tomorrow. These bluescreens are a nighmare. No idea when the next one wil happen when there isnt something specific causing them

Rob0rz, It may help you to update thr firmeare on your SSD. You can download the latest firmware from OCZ . I assume you have the Operating System on your SSD, if that is true you will need to download the PC Bootable version as the Toolbox will not update the firmware from the OS drive. Just download the .ISO file and burn it to a CD using an iso burning program or the windows iso burning program installed on your OS and boot from the CD. To use the windows program, just double click the .ISO and the program will open, make sure you have a blank cd in the DVD drive. You can do that by using the one time boot key or changing the boot options in BIOS to boot from DVD/CD first. Another alternative is to use a USB Thumb drive and a program such as UltraISO (free 30 day trial) to burn the iso to the thumb drive and boot from it.

Thanks for the reply, Luckily I managed to find a blank CD I can use to do this. I could always try the usb method, I had to use that for memtest.

My Memtest has been running for 16 hours 24 mins with 3 passes and currently no errors. Its 81% in to the 4th run so I think I will let that finish.

Ok will do. It seems like it is taking atleast 3-4 hours if not more per pass. The 4th run is almot done now, and its just turned 18 hours. I do have 12 GB of ram though, could this be why?

8 Passes, took 42 hours, no errors.

I am now trying to get this OCZ toolbox working to update firmware but it doesnt want to work.

I have tried using USB and a CD to put the ISO on following guides here NEW!! - PC Bootable Toolbox and each time it goes through the starting set up it gives this.

Any ideas ?

Trying Ultraiso now, I used the one in the guide to start with Universal usb installer.

Get back to you after I tried ultraiso.

Still happening, I see all the starting bit loading from USB, but then it just goes to this "tc@box:~$" and spamming 6, now idea whats going on and why its not working. Followed all the guides even from OCZ.



Turns out trying the OCZ toolbox exe, not a bootable version, (unlike before when it wouldn't detect my ssd) now picks up my ssd and I can see the option to perform a firmware update, but then its telling me I cannot perform this operation on primary drive and I have to boot to another drive..
