Thanks for the reply Arc..

couple of things...firstly, I'm having problems installing SP1 by any of the ways suggested, burning the iso, tried mounting it (not literally!! lol). DL'ed from MSDN, DL'ed through updates...all failed. Tried the System Readiness Tool as well.. any ideas?

next is Memtest, it's prob very easy but how do I a) select how many passes it does? when I tried it, it was up to 10 I think and still going! and b) How do I get the info from memtest into a format where I can post it?

Cheers muchly

Memtest showing up red so it looks like it's time for some new memory...system specs say its Samsung DDR3 but Crucial scanner says I should buy DDR2!! Which is double the price!

My SP1 update problem is still ongoing, tried both the options on the page you suggested..but in update history it still has 3 instances of failed SP1 update and is showing SP1 as downloaded and ready to install?

Sorry for jumping in but I think the ram failure is preventing you from getting windows updates. Try removing the stick which is damaged and see if windows updates.

On Memtest does the info below the column headers appear when test starts or only when there are problems? Only because when I tried with both sticks in, the info/addresses were there straight away, white on red, then I tried one stick and there wasn't any info so wasn't sure if it was working or not! I thnk they are DIMM's (2 blue slots, 2 brown/black) does that make a difference?

With two sticks, memtest came out as white on red?

Now check the sticks individually, one by one, in different slots.

Cheers guys, sorted out which was faulty stick and removed, seems ok now!

Just quick question, off topic but pertinent! when making image what exactly is imaged? whole partition, used space on partition or can it be just operating system with sp1 installed? Would just like to put it on dvd rather than another HD

Thx again

Cheers Folks, dodgy ram removal seems to have sorted it for now! Quick off topic question? When making an image, what is imaged? Is it the whole partition, the used part of the partition or can you make an image that fits onto a DVD?
