Solved BSOD in multiple ways error 0x01E

Hello,

A few years ago I got my HP Pavilion dv6 laptop for college. It worked well, but now it crashes multiple times daily. It seems like it can crash at any time whether I'm video gaming, youtubing, even trying to open Google Chrome. My laptop still boots up fine and it does not crash in safe mode.

I have tried so many "fixes" that I cannot remember all of them. I have run scans on Norton 360 and Malwarebytes. Neither picked anything up. I used CCleaner and Windows disk cleanup in order to free up space. More notably, 2 days ago I did a clean install of Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit while formatting all the hard drives that I could. Disk space should no longer be an issue, but the crashes continue.

After the clean install, I ran Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool which caught something called Win64/Alureon, but did not remove it. From google searching I downloaded Microsoft Security Essentials. MSE found nothing on quick scan and my laptop crashes long before a full scan is completed.

I have to admit that when it comes to computer part knowledge, I do not know much of it. That is why I came here and followed the instructions on another thread to create a zip file to upload here in order to hopefully find out not only what is causing my laptop to crash, but also how to fix the problem. Uninstall Norton 360 and all Symantec products using Norton Removal tool. Use Microsoft Security Essentials as your antivirus with windows inbuilt firewall, and free MBAM as the on demand scanner.

Thank you for your help Arc. I have uninstalled Norton 360 using the removal tool. I did a quick scan with MSE and it spotted Win64/Alureon.gen!A. I followed the recommended action to clean it and MSE tells me to use Windows Defender Offline in order to complete the cleaning process. However, MSE's prompt to download and run Windows Defender Offline uses the 32-bit version. Thus I downloaded the 64-bit version off Microsoft's website and burned it to an empty CD and that runs Windows Defender Offline fine.

Upon running Windows Defender Offline, the quick scan picked up Trojan: DOS/Alureon.J (No space between : and D. I spaced so that the emoticon does not show up) and the recommended action is to remove it. However, when I try removing it, I get an error 0x8007065b. Function failed during execution. Oddly enough, the Windows Defender heading says my actions have been applied successfully when in fact they have not.

How can I remedy this problem? I have no had the chance to install MBAM yet. Should I install MBAM and do a full scan on MBAM before trying to use MSE and Windows Defender Offline again? Or should I take a different approach?

0x8007065b error could indicate a connection problem during a signature update. Try to run MBAM but first you may have a root virus that no amount of Windows installs will cure. The virus perpetuates itself.

Run the TDSSKiller. You can get it here: Anti-rootkit utility TDSSKiller

Then run MBAM

Yes thank you for your help carwiz. I installed and ran TDSSKiller and it caught a Rootkit.Boot.Pihar.c and removed it. I then installed MBAM and did a threat scan which caught nothing. After that on MSE I saw some of the Alureon malware quarantined so I removed them all. Today I have been running my computer for seven hours and so far I have no crashes to report. I think I will run Windows Defender Offline again just to be sure everything is gone. Then I will continue to monitor my computer the next three days and see if I get another crash or not.

Bad that you had it but good it was found and removed. I would run MBAM and/or WDO on all your external drives as well, if you have any that weren't plugged in or part of the original scan. Especially any USB thumb drives you have used since the problem started.

It has been five days and no crashes to report. Looks like the problem is all gone. Thank you again Arc and carwiz for all of your help. I scanned my external drives and they all came back clean.
