Hi all,

I've started to regularly received bsod errors on this laptop. They occurred infrequently at first, then have regularly happened on a daily basis for the past month. In terms of scale, sometimes the system can run for a few hours, sometimes it bsod on startup. (always error code x124).

The BSOD have been triggered by a number of different things, but not all necessarily trigger the bsod. Startup, youtube, videos, games, opening pdf or browsers, photo and video editing.

I've very limited knowledge and have been lurking on these forums for a month trying various suggestions but have come to seek advice. I've performed a memory test which came up clean. Admittedly though, I only ran it for two cycles. I've used CCleaner, updated all driver information, opened the laptop to check for obvious bad connections, hoovered parts and have a desktop fan blowing on the vent for the graphics card.

I'm attaching the event log

Please if someone could give me some advice as I'm reaching the end of ideas.

Hi,

Thanks for the added info.

Your logs show a Stop 0x124, which is usually hardware related.

This bug check indicates that a fatal hardware error has occurred. This bug check
uses the error data that is provided by the Windows Hardware Error Architecture (WHEA).

As Stop 0x124 minidumps contain very little practical information, it is therefore
necessary to approach the problem as a case of hardware in an unknown state of
distress.

Further analysis indicates that there was a problem reading the processor cache:

I would suggest updating your 3rd party drivers and also the BIOS as this error does not always
indicate a failure in the processor, but can also be caused by outdated drivers or an outdated BIOS.

I would also advise to read this guide:

:ar: http://www.sevenforums.com/crash-lockup-debug-how/35349-stop-0x124-what-means-what-try.html

If you are overclocking STOP. Return to the default settings at least for now.
If you are running a RAID update its driver.

Stress Tests:
You should perform a stress test on the CPU/hardware to help determine whether a hardware
issue exists:

Hardware - Stress Test With Prime95: :ar: Hardware - Stress Test With Prime95
CPU - Stress Test Using IntelBurnTest: :ar:
CPU - Stress Test Using IntelBurnTest
Video Card - Stress Test with Furmark: :ar:
Video Card - Stress Test with Furmark

Monitor temperature of the system during the tests with :ar: HWMonitor

Memory Testing:

Also run memtest. Run for 8 passes and test each stick in a know good slot for an additional 6 passes.

:ar: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/105647-ram-test-memtest86.html

   Tip
Run these tests overnight

The goal is to test all the RAM sticks and all the motherboard slots.

Hard drive Diagnostic Tests:

Post back any results/observations

cheers

So far I've run all of the hardware tests. It seems that it's one of the cpu cores. System temperature is fine and memtest and video card have come back clear.

Prime95 showed that the cpu core 2 failed the test. Interestingly, the system would crash pretty much straight away on the cpu stress test with the inteburn test.

I'm guessing pretty much that it means the cpu needs to be replaced. Price wise that's fine as I can pick one up for £15. Just a little bit apprehensive, I've never done a full notebook dismantle. I've watched some tutorials, so "how hard can it be?"

Is there anything you think I might be missing? Thanks Dave for your help.

Perhaps a new CPU, but a few things to try first as usually apart from excessive overheating
of the CPU and/or Physical damage, failings are usually rare.

Firstly Updating the BIOS may correct the issue, as it is quite old:

Code:
[BIOS Information (Type 0) - Length 24 - Handle 0000h]

You can follow this guide from HP:

:ar: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=uk&lc=en&dlc=en&docname=c00042629

   Warning
Please follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully when updating the BIOS, as incorrectly updated, may render your computer unusable!!

If you decide to replace CPU:

I have dismantled many laptops, you can usually find step by step guides to replacing various
devices etc. Like this one :ar: HP Pavilion-Strip down (thermal paste-graphics card change) - YouTube

You have to be careful dismantling, taking note of which screws go where etc, and there is
always usually a hidden screw, so if the laptop case isn't willing to
come apart easily....look for the hidden screw/s.

Also you have to be aware of :ar: ESD (Electrostatic discharge)

Also for the time being you may switch off the faulting core, in order to stop the BSOD's
until the issue is rectified:

To disable the 2nd core of your dual core processor:
Instructions:

Code:
1. Press the "[B]Win key+R[/B]"

2. Type "[B]msconfig[/B]" in the resulting run window and select "[B]OK[/B]."
Click the "[B]Boot[/B]" tab next to "[B]General[/B]." Select "[B]Advanced options[/B]..."

3. Check the box next to "[B]Number of processors[/B]." Select "[B]1[/B]" from
the drop-down menu. This disables the second core of your dual-core
processor within the operating system.
Restart your computer for the change to take effect.
You can return to this menu at any time to re-enable the disabled core.
   Note
Disabling cores decreases system performance.

Cheers

Sorry this has taken so long, I've been waiting for the CPU to arrive from America.

Which it did, today! So i've installed the new cpu and am currently running the stress tests on it. fingers crossed it work.

This arctic silver stuff is awesome though, it's running so much cooler.

Anyway, I updated the bio before to no avail and I've been running the system on a single core ever since. That worked perfectly, no bsod errors. Hopefully that means it was just the cpu and all is well.

Thanks so much for your help, i'll repost later

Tom

Just finished running the Intelburntest CPU stress test.

The system failed after the second test. I'm somewhat confused as to what to do.

I replaced the CPU with a new one. I installed new thermal paste, arctic silver, whilst following instructions. The system also always runs with a desk fan blowing into it.

I didn't heat up the motherboard with a heat gun. Is that something I should look into doing?

Hi,

Sorry I somehow missed your post :o

Hmmm so you replaced the CPU and it failed the Intelburntest CPU stress test!!!!????

All I can think of is to re-check your work. Make sure no CPU Pins are bent etc
and the CPU is seated properly then stress test again.

Are you still experiencing BSOD's? If so post up a new log please.

cheers

Dave

I've got a new dump for you. I used the tool as before, but it didn't provide any new .dump files?

As for the hardware, I've opened up and had another look and it all seems ok. What's surprising me is the prime95 tester is coming back clean and the intel burn is saying that it's unstable.
