I've been getting involuntary shutdowns periodically. Sometimes I come in in the morning and the see that Win 7 has shut itself down. Just saw it happen in the middle of working today, so am sending minidump and Perf Monitor report files as per directions.

This is a Dell computer, Win 7 64 bit (OEM I think), about 6 months old. I think this has been happening since I got it.

Any help appreciated.

Problem continues despite update

After some research, I contacted my backup software company, FirstBackup.com, and they sent a program update which they said would correct the problem.

It has continued to recur, about 2-3 times weekly. I've attached the zip file per instructions, and below is what appeared on my screen. Hope you can help.

Virtually all of these Related to FAMv4.sys mini-filter driver (x86) from FAMv4. I would re-install most recent driver version.

I would also remove and replace Symantec with Microsoft Security essentials

Hi,

The FAMv4.sys driver that is related to your back up software is still causing you BSODs.

Given you have already updated it, your options are limited. The easiest solution would be to stop using the software, but that may not be possible.

One possible solution is to change your AV software, Norton is notorious for interferring where it shouldn't and causing unrelated drivers to fail - leading to BSODs.

Note that if the BSODs do not stop after Norton is uninstalled then it is clearly not the cause and you can re-install it if you wish.

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, I do need the backup software. And although Norton has its detractors, over many years it has done the job for me, so not wanting to switch if at all possible.

3 questions. 1. The famv4.sys driver is on my system in 2 places, windows/system32/drivers, and programfiles(x86)/FirstBackupPro . Is that itself a problem?

2. I went into FirstBackupPro, and under options, disabled the Open File Agent. Wondering if that is likely to fix the problem.

3. I am not a technical person. What would happen if I tried renaming (not deleting) the driver files?

Thanks

Deborah

1-Not a problem.

2-Probably not.

3-Renaming the driver (*.bak) would prevent it from loading and probably kill the backup app

If you absolutely must use that backup program you may just have to live with the crashes.

Regarding Norton:

Many people use it for years with no problems only to develop one when another 3rd party driver was installed. Your call of course.
