Last night my computer froze on preparing to configure windows updates. I had to resort to a hard rest, since then I have been getting a BSOD.
I have tested each ram disk by removing one at a time, this doesn't seem to be the problem.
I have ran a driver verifier and it is coming up with an hidclass.sys error.

A few things I've tried:
I've system restored to before the BSOD appeared and that worked fine, I then however installed the updates from windows update. Upon restart I now get a BSOD, also now for some reason I can't see the working system restore on the list and am stuck. All other restores cause the BSOD.

I have a feeling it has to do with the updates but I can't open windows update in safe mode so don't know what to do. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I've attached all the dump files, the general BSOD, and the driver verifier dump.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I have important uni work that needs to be done

EDIT: Also I forgot to mention that this occurs after the welcome screen.

Hello adtither.

Verifier is not needed here, as the normal BSODs clearly points out the culprit. It is avast! Self Protection Driver.

Uninstall Avast using Avast Uninstall Utility. Use Microsoft Security Essentials as your antivirus with windows inbuilt firewall, and free MBAM as the on demand scanner.
Download, install and update those, and then run full system scans with both of them, one by one.

Let us know the results.

Thanks for the reply! Just to clarify as I'm working in safe mode. Should I install the software, do a full scan before attempting to boot windows normally to see if the BSOD is gone. Thanks.

Yes, that is stated there in http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility ....
How to uninstall our software using aswClear:

  1. Download aswclear.exe on your desktop
  2. Start Windows in Safe Mode
  3. Open (execute) the uninstall utility
  4. If you installed avast! in a different folder than the default, browse for it. (Note: Be careful! The content of any folder you choose will be deleted!)
  5. Click REMOVE
  6. Restart your computer
