I recently rebuilt a machine for home use. The motherboard is a Gigabyte P55M-UD2 Rev. 1.0, the CPU is an Intel i5 750 @ 2.67 GHz, the memory is (4) 2 GB Gskill (?) dims. All the parts are on the approved list at Gigabyte. And the machine had been running fine. I just swapped out hard drives, cleaned it up and rebuilt it with a fresh copy of Win7 Ultimate x64 and a different graphics card.
I did start out with a Sapphire HD5570 card (1 GB DDR3). I swapped to an older much generic card - thinking at first it was a video card problem.

I've done most of the usual steps. I scanned with MBAM after running RKILL. It never found any running processes or registry entries. Only some files (which I knew would be found). Since I'm trying to fix this problem I let it get rid of everything it found. I ran the MS security tool and another security tool. Neither found anything.
I ran MEMTEST+ against all 8 GB 12 times and it came up with no errors.
Strangely Speccy will not run.

I thought the problem had been solved but it came back again late this week. So here I am. I can usually get myself out of most problems (I'm a computer geek for a living - many, many years). This one is driving me crazy and doubly so since it's my home machine. I gave the wife the good old quad core that's been running like a champ! Doh! :(

I have never seen issues like this. I have over 100 physical machines, servers & laptops at work and nearly 100 virtual machines - all Win7 64 bit.

The BSOD happen on their own, sometimes when the machine is going to sleep, sometimes not. They also happen quite often just as I'm logging in. The last one happened in Chrome trying to fill this out. (I'm now in SAFE MODE - it's always stable in SAFE MODE).

Can someone help me out? I think I've done all the prerequisites. If not tell me what to do.
Dan

Hello kb9jlo, Welcome to SF

First off the usual stuff, if your OCing in anyway stop, return everything to stock settings for the purposes of testing

If you havent already, fill in your system specs so we know what we are dealing with
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/180324-system-info-see-your-system-specs.html

Run some scans to check against virus or infection
http://support.kaspersky.com/5350
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/166445-windows-defender-offline.html

Had a good look through your dumps, heres an overview

View attachment 257678

Most of them are error codes 0x1A which is memory related BSOD Index
Memory problems can be caused by drivers or physical memory and that includes RAM, HDD (pagefile hiberfile etc) & GFX RAM
Looking at the dumps with specific causes they all blame drivers that are provided by MS via install media and SP1 so we can assume the drivers themselves are not to blame i think you should run some hardware tests and as the drivers mentioned are ataport.sys, fileinfo.sys, ntfs.sys i would start with HDD tests as i reckon you may have an issue there

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/433-disk-check.html (windows based check)
Hard Drive Diagnostic Procedure (bootable disk check)

if they come back ok then i would move on to
memtest and some stress testing of the gfx

Pauly, thanks for the reply.

No over clocking. Nothing like that. I'm very boring.

I will do the virus scans -- I've already done the MS Defender online. E'thing keeps coming up negative. But I will run again.

I did Memtest -- ran all 8 GB 12 times -- took forever. Nothing came up.

I just followed your directions on entering system specs and it should all be in there now.

I will run the hard drive test.

I will report back on the HD test and virus scans.

Virus scans showed nothing.

I did the hard drive test (WD offline test) and it came up empty on both drives (I have (2) 500 GB drives, one system one data).

I will try the video card test next.
Is there a utility to make sure I don't have any "extra" video card drivers hanging in there? A "cleanup" utility for ATI video cards?

OK, here's where I'm at now.

I did the "cleanup" on the video drivers and it found a BUNCH of stuff.

I rebooted, installed the video card stress tester (Furmark) and it won't run. I suspect probably because this card that I have in there now is so basic a card.
(Error: Could not intialize ZoomGPU. FurMark startup failed. Bye!)

When I first got on my machine tonight the screen would 'blink' and I got two or three 'AW Snap!' in Chrome as well - which usually preceded a BSOD.

I'm running now after the cleanup and don't notice any blinks or Chrome issues...

I haven't had any BSODs the last few days but I have no idea why not...

What do you suggest I try from here?

Hold up. I don't really have a driver installed... DriverSweep took off the "real" driver...

I haven't spent a lot of time with this machine. For some reason now it has no driver - just a Windows driver and the 2nd video port is showing up as no driver at all.
I reinstalled the video driver for this card and it still didn't work.
Tonight I just left the machine on and it BSOD once and then when I came down to shut it down it did it again.

I'm including the latest logs. Hoping something will jump out at you.

There are three dumps in your file each with a different bug check
BSOD Index

Try removing all gfx drivers, run sweeper, disable internal gfx then reinstall drivers for card, you can specify drivers or let site auto detect whats best for you which is often easier
We can be reasonably sure its a driver problem as your machine runs ok in safe mode but its strange how its behaving, you could also try the reverse and disable gfx card and run on internal for testing ?
Did you manage to get gfx test to run at all as thinking about it, it could still be an issue with gfx memory or card temps ??

Thanks for the response Pauly. You were affirming my thoughts.

There is no internal card -- that's what so weird looking about the screen shot. And no the driver was never working right. I have another card but as you advise I'm going to try to remove everything graphics related. And run sweeper to be sure.

I do still have an old ancient PCI video card. Do you think I should try it? Maybe the PCI-E slot is bad plus I was thinking going all the way back to plain vanilla VGA might give me a better place to start from. That is if Win7 will even recognize that old of a card...

Safe mode is always a good starting point, will only boot with basic vga if it runs ok in safe mode should give you an idea whether its driver or hardware although you wont be able to put much strain on the gfx

Dont see why your old pci wouldnt work, may be worth a try its up to you :)

OK, I found an old Nvidia card laying around at work, GeForce GT610 2G. I wanted to use it since it was Nvidia and I could be certain no ATI stuff was contaminating anything up.
I don't know anything about the card but thought I'd give it a shot. I'm not a gamer.

I took a screen shot of device manager so you could see that the card and driver did successfully install. Win7 did it on its own actually. And it's a Nvidia driver as well... In fact it's already whining about an update but I want to see if it stabilizes first.

Oh, one more thing. I stuck this card in the 2nd PCIe slot instead of the 1st. Thinking it might be a bad slot. Trying to rule out 2 things at once. I hope.

I will let it run and see if it BSOD. If not I'll run the graphics utility and see how it likes that.

If it does BSOD I'll upload new logs. Thanks for all your help.

And your 100% correct. While in Safe Mode I never had a BSOD no matter how long I left it on. And it ran 3 or 4 days straight with that Memtest going. Now if we can just find which driver is the culprit.

Pauly, thought I'd give you an update.

Fingers crossed, knock on wood, all that superstition stuff, it has been fine. Not a bit of problem. I've let it go to sleep by itself (that usually prompted one). It also wakes up every evening at 6 PM and sets the time.

I'll check back in over the weekend one way or the other.

Thanks again.

Pauly, I've had almost two weeks now with no trouble. Not sure what it was exactly -- well other than it had something to do with the ATI card and driver...

I'm pretty pleased. I'm going to take things slowly and not add too much too quickly but I'm prepared to mark this solved and I want to thank you again for all your help. For the most part I consider myself an expert. But even so called "experts" need help every once in a while too! Just goes to show you - no matter how much you know, no matter how much you can figure out -- you can't have it all and you can't know it all.

Again, Pauly, thanks a million!
