Solved BSOD occuring at random

Hi all,

I have bad news. I think the manually adjusted voltage might be causing a different type of failure.

Although the system no longer goes to BSOD, what happens is that explorer seems to crash causing Windows to freeze. This only seems to happen after being idle for a prolonged period (estimate in excess of 7-8 hours)

Any suggestions?

Run a system file check - SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker
If it says it found errors it cannot fix, run it two more times with re-boots after each run.

What power plan are you running?
Should be Balanced, go to advanced and in the Hard drive section change the time to sleep to the equivalent of 12 hours.

I ran the test as suggested it found no errors.
I also checked my power settings and configured them as recommended.

Despite all that I just had it crash on me again. It seems to be something of an I/O error again but it didn't prompt a BSOD. Just explorer crashing.

Enable Driver Verifier, and run your computer as usual. This will make your system a bit slower as it is trying to stress the drivers to find a weak one and make it crash. This is the best way to find if there is a driver causing the issues.
We would like to get 3-5 crashes or more, this will help to identify the cause. Post the full BSoD crash reports if you get any crashes.
Be sure to make a System Restore point first.

Dave looking back at #25 that SSD is running awful hot mine are running near cold

All monitoring programs get sensor readings wrong, I just dismissed it. Wouldn't hurt to verify though.

Wolfgangs246, after your system has been running for a while, open the side panel and touch the SSD to confirm if it is too hot, 128°C will boil water so be careful.

+1 Dave just it was SO out of whack I didn't notice it first time round and yep 128C is like out of the microwave temps

Hah hah. Sorry guys, been letting the computer run with that driver verifier program and so far no crashes. I'll pop open the casing and touch the SSD in a bit but as I understand the sensor will always get the SSD temperature wrong?

I get correct SSD temps on some monitoring programs, but not all.

Ok the computer crashed with a BSOD after several days of running the driver verifier. the error was a STOP 0x000000F4 error but nothing got populated into the minidump folder again.

I've also palmed the SSD after several hours of continual usage. The temperature of the SSD would be described as lukewarm to the touch.

If it took several days to come up with this, I wouldn't worry about it.
Good news on the SSD temp, figured it would be.

This indicates that a process or thread crucial to system operation has unexpectedly exited or been terminated.

You can disable Driver Verifier.
