BSOD often when booting but also during use

Didn't I do that when I deleted the drives? i missed understood. Is it a driver? I don't see it as a program. Are you saying just delete the driver?

:) It should be done, if you have done it properly in device manager. Posting the steps again, have another try ....

Get rid of nvstor.sys.

  1. Right click on "my computer" icon and click "manage" on the context menu.
  2. It will open the "computer management" window.
  3. Select "Device Manager" in the left pane, It will list all the existing devices up.
  4. Expand "Disc Drives" by clicking on the triangle in front of it.
  5. Select one item under it, right click, uninstall.
  6. Continue the process for all items under "Disc Drives"
  7. Now restart the computer. At restart, windows will auto configure the appropriate system driver, msahci.sys.
Disc check:

  1. Update your SSD's Firmware (Skip this step, if it is not a SSD)
  2. Reseat the sata and power.
  3. Run chkdsk /f/r, following the option two of the tutorial Disk Check
  4. Seatool for dos: SeaTools | Seagate download
Burn it in a blank cd. boot from the CD, click on "Accept", wait for it to finish detecting the drives, then in the upper left corner select "Basic Tests", then select "Long Test" and let it run.
Scan the system for possible virus infection. (as a precaution)

Ok...i must be doing something seriously wrong...i followed the instructions again for removing nvstor but I don't think it's working. The only thing I can think of is that for 3 of the drives, i get told that i need to restart to complete uninstalling. I choose to defer until the last one because they automatically reinstall upon reboot. does that make sense?

Also, i had two crashes while deleting/rebooting.

Now it is somehow clear to me .... you have two antivirus programs installed.

Uninstall AVG.
Use Microsoft Security Essentials only as your antivirus with windows inbuilt firewall, and free MBAM as the on demand scanner.

Download ,install and update those, and then run full system scans with both of them, one by one.

Also, follow the other two steps as I suggested.

Ok, no BSODs since the 23rd. I'm still not really sure if i got rid of nvstor. I have had a couple of random shut downs thought - i don't know if they're related to the bsods but it's like someone flicked a switch and the computer just goes dark. Reboots fine. Any ideas?

A search revealed that you are using nForce as the chipset driver, and that includes nvstor.sys as the storage controller driver. You need to try to update nForce, as it contains not only the storage controller, but also network controller and a lot of other vital drivers.

Go to Drivers - Download NVIDIA Drivers, search for nForce, as per your motherboard's chipset specifications.
nForce_zpse7e15947.jpg

Also plan for a BIOS update.

Apply the latest version of nVidia display driver.
You may download it directly, from our forum link http://www.sevenforums.com/graphic-cards/602-latest-nvidia-forceware-video-drivers-windows-7-a.html; or you may opt for the Option 2 of Drivers- Download NVIDIA Drivers for “Automatically find drivers for my NVIDIA products” (it requires java installed).

Thanks. I'm up to date (or close to it) for the display drive but don't think i've ever updated the chipset driver and am doing now...as for the bios, I have looked for the latest but I think I already have it.

One question, would this problem affect booting as well?

Do some general USB troubleshooting. For the port, first, uninstall and reinstall the USB ports drivers as follows:

  1. Right click on Computer icon > manage. It will open the computer management window.
  2. Click on "Device Manager" in the left pane, it will list all installed devices up.
  3. Expand "USB Serial Bus Controllers" by clicking on the triangle in front of it.
  4. Click on one item to select, then right click and uninstall.
  5. Do the same for all.
  6. Restart the computer.
  7. At restart, windows will auto configure the appropriate drivers.
And, Disable USB Selective Suspense too.
USB Selective Suspend - Turn On or Off

For the devices, first, detach all the USB devices other than the keyboard and mouse.
Then, Update the drivers for them all, including the keyboard and mouse, if any third party drivers are installed for them.

Let us know the results.
