BSOD on log in or shortly afterwards

Hi there,

Suddenly today, and to the best of my knowledge without adding any new programs/hardware, windows began crashing to the BSOD. It usually happens about 1 minute after logging in although sometimes it is immediate and very rarely I can use the computer for about 20 minutes. I don't know if it is related but shortly before the BSOD came up in this instance, all shockwave players on the internet started failing for me - which had never happened before.

I have attached the minidump folder so hopefully that helps.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

Many thanks,

James

Welcome to the Seven forums james!

Sorry to hear of your issues...

No attached file.

Some questions for you:

Have you tried Safe Mode? If so what results?

Have you been in BIOS? If so, reset to factory defaults.

Are you running AV? Who's?

What version of Win7, and where did you acquire it?

unplug usb devices that aren't keyboard and monitor... check msconfig for new startup items you don't need running on startup. Disable all if possible then reboot (if you can get in normal mode long enough or in safe mode)

Right, tried again with the attachment!

Running in safe mode and there's no problems.

I'm not sure what I'm doing with BIOS so have stayed well away!

What's AV? (Sorry!)

It's the x64 version I believe and it came installed on my laptop.

Hope that helps!

AV = antivirus

If you're able to run normally in safemode, the bsod's are usually related to drivers or software installed.

Please check your 'msconfig' by typing "msconfig" in the windows search area.

sorry about the delay - tried disabling those startup programs in msconfig but no joy - almost immediate bsod in normal mode...

as for AV - I'm running Avast! Home Edition and I think also McAfee Security Centre

^^ not good to run 2 at a time.

But uninstallers won't start in safemode... so disable them in msconfig / startup

So very true... many AV apps will conflict with each other. Running 2 doesnt mean you are twice as protected. Uninstall one thru safe mode and see what happens!

Do you have restore discs or a restore partition? You might have to reinstall or try a repair of OS...

Right I've uninstalled one and am running in normal mode. However it doesn't look too promising - the screen flickered randomly and I lost connectivity for about 2 minutes (which has never happened before...).

Also it seems that no restore discs were provided. I'm not sure if I have a restore partition but I'm figuring that if i don't have a clue what it is I probably haven't got/created one!

Still, until I get another BSOD I imagine I'll have to sit here and keep my fingers crossed?

Hopefully this is the only time I will have to thank you guys for your help!

Thank you,

James

If you're concerned about stability:

uninstall the "kept" AV (whatever you're still running)
run a registry cleaner like ccleaner or whatever is currently supported with windows 7
then start again with only 1 antivirus.

You may need to run the uninstaller off of Avast's site. It runs a "protection capsule" that may or may not let you uninstall from your profile.
