Hi, I'm inexperienced at posting in forums so pls excuse me if I do something wrong here. I followed the posting instructions and downloaded the System file collection app .exe file but when I ran it as Administrator my Norton SONAR thought it was a virus and deleted it.

I'm running Windows 7 (64 bit) on a new Hp Pavilion DV6 notebook. A few days ago my USB mouse stopped working. Around the same time, I found Windows seemed to take ages to shut down - so long that I would go away to a meeting and then I'd notice it showing the login screen when I return 30 - 60 minutes later. When I login, it warns me that it had an unexpected error and when I view the details it shows:

Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: BlueScreen
OS Version: 6.1.7600.2.0.0.768.3
Locale ID: 5129
Additional information about the problem:
BCCode: 1000009f
BCP1: 0000000000000004
BCP2: 0000000000000258
BCP3: FFFFFA800417A040
BCP4: FFFFF80000B9C510
OS Version: 6_1_7600
Service Pack: 0_0
Product: 768_1
Files that help describe the problem:
C:\Windows\Minidump\072710-17643-01.dmp
C:\Users\Mike2010\AppData\Local\Temp\WER-34788-0.sysdata.xml

After this problem happened a couple of times I also had new error messages appear, such as:

CLIStart.exe - Bad Image
C:\windows\system32\atiadlxy.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or contains an error... [I Googled this file and found it related to ATI Catalyst so I went through Control Panel to Programs & Features and Repaired it, but the error message still appears.]

Smartmenu.exe - Corrupt File
c:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\HP MediaSmart\Movies & TV is corrupt. Please run chkdsk... [I ran CHKDSK /F from command prompt and it found and repaired a lot of corrupt files. This error message no longer appears]

Although my USB mouse is now working again, my notebook still seems to hang and then BlueScreen every time I now shut it down. I tried rolling back to a restore point, but it fails at the stage of trying to create mirror(?).

Please can anyone help before I have to go back to factory settings and reinstall all my apps and files from scratch.

Thank you very much for reading this.

Mike.

Ok, I managed to follow the Griff instructions to zip up things. Hope this is what you need. No idea how any of this makes sense to you guys, but a huge thank you for looking at this!

My USB mouse has stopped working again and I had another couple of BlueSceen failures today whan I was away from my computer (it was sitting on the login screen when I got back) so it BlueScreens when idle as well as on shutdown.

Thanks again.

Mildly amusing I must admit. The first thing I'd ask you to do once I opened the dump files would be to ask you to remove Norton. It is well-known for causing BSODs on Vista and 7.

Here is the Norton removal tool: ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/removal_tools/Norton_Removal_Tool.exe

Replace it with the free Microsoft Security Essentials: www.microsoft.com/Security_Essentials/

Then, run the scripts again. This time, make sure to right-click on them and select Run as Administrator.

Quick feedback on this - I was losing too much time and felt unlikely to resolve this quickly so did a factory recovery on my notebook, reinstalled software and restored back-up data. Now back online and still working through the various Windows and HP updates. No more BlueScreens... yet.

Sincere thanks to all who took time to look at this post and tried to help.
