BSOD on startup on fresh Win7 install

I had an ASRock mobo die on me due to video/PCIE reasons. I still had enough components to revive the pc except for mobo, so I got a Gigabyte GA-880GM-USB3 which would still be compatible with the CPU, and give me USB3.

I did as fresh install of W7Pro on the Samsung 850 Evo 500GB SSD, but now it only boots in safe mode, and I haven't figured out why. There is a quick blue screen on loading Windows, but it's too quick to reboot to get a look at it. I ran memtest86+ from ultimate boot disk overnight. It found no errors.

What should I look into next?

Thanks,
Karl

I managed to take a picture of the blue screen
it reads PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA

*** STOP: 0x00000050 ....

I've read that this error can appear after hardware changes, but this is a week-old fresh Windows install...

Hi karlbr,

How old is your system?

Since there are no dumps in the zip and the logs don't provide much information, I would suggest to try a clean boot.

Diagnostics Test

 Clean boot

Please try the following:
  • Search msconfig and open it
    • Go to the tab services
    • Check 'hide microsoft services'
    • Uncheck all other services
    • Go to the tab startup
    • Disable everything
  • Click apply and click ok
  • Reboot if asked
See if the problem persist, if the problem does not persist enable in the startup tab in taskmanager 1 item and in the services tab in msconfig also 1 service, reboot and see if the problem persist. Keep doing this until you find the culprit or there is nothing left.

I booted up in safe mode + networking and got "windows recovered from an unexpected shutdown (possibly related?)
minidump is attached.

The system was originally put together in 2009 (my first build), but there is not much inside the case that hasn't been replaced besides the power supply and two sticks of 2gb OCZ Reaper ram (have added two more sticks from ebay, and Memtest seems to have cleared these)
This is all now on a week-old Win7 install.

As for services, there's practically nothing there (screenshot attached), but I will try disabling the asw thing in a bit

Thanks,
Karl

I disabled aswbidsAgent on services, still can't boot to non-safe mode, used phone to take video of BSOD. Screenshot of phone video attached.

I'm not particularly attached to this Windows install, but seeing as there's nothing on it, I have a hard time believing that it's a software issue

Attached is another minidump
The only two things left under services in msconfig left are mozilla maintenance service and avast antivirus. Do I nix those too?

I also tried getting rid of the pagefile entirely. Same result.

Pagefile shouldn't be deleted, it is a very important element in BSODs and performance.

Both crashes are caused by avast, remove it.

Hi Karl,

I would suggest for the momemt please uninstall Avast, in Safe Mode its actually recommended to do it from there:D
That will remove the other entry its part of Avast anyway.
(no microsoft services are showing as youve got the hide box ticked.)

It wouldn't hurt to run a repair install either, IE8 and regsrv32 are showing as problems.

Roy,
I tried to run a repair install, but Windows repair isn't picking up my SSD (currently "C"). It offers me the opportunity to furnish a driver in order to see the drive. I've never needed a driver to see my SSD, so I'm not sure how to do that. Is there another way to do the repair for the regsrv32 you mentioned?

update

the RAM is actually 4x 2GB OCZ Reaper, I shelved the GSkill Ripjaws, once I found out it was incompatible with the old motherboard.

The SSD is a Samsung 850Evo 500GB. I just installed Samsung Magician.
It tells me Firmware version: latest

The system now boots. I have my monitor connected to the video card (an EVGA NVIDIA 740SC). I noticed WEI was giving me a "1" on video and got curious and saw Windows has not recognized the video card. The EVGA driver package also does not recognize the card. on going to graphics properties, it tells me "Standard VGA Graphics adapter." The video card is still under warranty

My wifi usb thing has also had intermittent grumpiness.

I didn't have nearly this much trouble setting up the computer with the original motherboard

Why is this thing only sort-of recognizing the video card?

Hi Karl,

from your first BSOD report

Sound Tab 1: This computer cannot play audio because the Windows Audio service is not enabled. Use the Sounds and Devices Properties control panel to enable audio. No sound card was found. If one is expected, you should install a sound driver provided by the hardware manufacturer.

Is it properly seated???

Please go to
device manager, via control panel
Suspect you have an Unknown device - your card
(W7 tried to help by installing a generic graphics driver)

V309.08 dated 2015 GForce seven series

http://us.download.nvidia.com/Windo...n8-win7-winvista-64bit-international-whql.exe

As for your wifi driver try updating that

for sfc/scannow, the result is:
"Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations

SURT told me it was not applicable for my installation.

I reloaded the wifi driver, seems to be ok now.

I have been getting the weird error in the attached screenshot, which restarts explorer.

The video card driver you mentioned tells me "NVIDIA installer cannot continue, this graphics card driver could not find compatible hardware"

Hi Karl,

Explorer.exe is the mainstay of your system, if its not working properly then things are only going to get worse, and possibly why Surt could not run.

Its possible that the media you used to install the system is corrupt, as your product is licenced via MSDN, you should be able to download a clean copy from MS.

Try another system repair with it, the new one.
If that fails - i hate to say it:( Clean install time, as we cant get the Surt repair tool to work either.

The booting issue was completely solved by uninstalling Avast. Now working on getting the video card to be properly recognized. Fortunately video card is eVGA with awesome warranty. Multiple attempts at installing NVIDIA drivers on system had led to "no supported hardware on this system." Maybe a fresher piece of hardware will be recognized better.
