BSOD on W7 Install

Am trying to install W7 RC1 build 7100 on my machine (specs below). The install set worked fine on my laptop. Any help would be appreciated.

1-line BSOD Reads:
STOP: 0X0000005C (0X0000010B, 0X00000003, 0X00000000, 0X00000000)

Along with this install, I am using an new 1TB hard drive, Western Digital W10EADS. It has nothing on it. (note: it was a bare drive - no jumpers)

I never received an option in the install to partition the drive
The install runs to a splash screen and crashes to the BSOD referenced above.

I attempted to boot into safe mode, and safe mode command prompt only.
I attempted boot with and without the video card

When in safe mode, it stopped after the disk.sys file was loading.

I then had real life duties that dragged me away. I have in mind to partition and format the new drive in my current XP configuration and then attempt the install, I just would like to know if anyone has also successfully handled this.

MSI MBOX RC410M-L
Intel P4 3 GHZ - not overclocked
2GB of RAM
1TB Hard Drive WD10EADS
NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GT vid card
onboard sound & networking

Unfortunately, there is little here to "debug". Crashes during a "clean" installation procedure are almost always caused by hardware-level problems.

0xC5 translates as HAL_INITIALIZATION_FAILED - extremely rare and very indicative of a hardware incompatibility or outright borkedness.

Thank you for introducing me to the term "Borkedness"... LOVE IT!

since there isn't really anything to debug from a BSOD perspective (we know it is a hardware issue) I am wondering if anyone might suggestion how to troubleshoot HAL errors.

Please either confirm I have a method right or if there's a better way/resource to guide me. Basically I need to attempt with and without various peripherals.

I am planning to try adding the new drive to the existing configuration and making a 130 GB NTFS partition, and divy up the remaining space into 3 or 4 more partitions. Then try dropping all other drives out and installing again.

Is it also possible that although the BIOS recognizes the drive and it's size, that I need to configure it as RAID for Windows 7 to recognize it. (it did seem odd to me that I was not offered the "Where do you want to install Windows 7" screen some blogs have mentioned. Could RAID have something to do with it?

I plan to try this again tomorrow. Any assistance/persepective is appreciated.

Hal errors are rather straightforward IMO - it's either a hardware problem or a driver problem.

Research the driver(s) to ensure that they are compatible with the OS.
Then test the device to ensure that it's working correctly. Most times this will involve substituting a known good part - although there are some hardware tests that will help.
