BSOD playing CoD4, BCCode a, only on CoD4?

I am hoping someone here can help me figure out why this is happening:cry:. When I play Call of Duty 4, the game will often go black...sometimes I get an audio loop of a second or two and my PC reboots, or sometimes i have to do a hard reset to get back to playing. I know it's an old game but it's one most of my friends play. I read the instructions and have attached the zip file.

I suspect it was sound related. I followed a suggestion that stated to disable on board audio which I did but I still crash same as I did prior to the change. Before I disabled On Board Audio the BBCode I was getting was 116 and not BCCode "a" like I am now, not sure if that is good or not but I would truly appreciate any help anyone can give me on this!

Thanks for your time,

Jorge

:warn: P2P Warning! :warn:

:info: Important: I notice that there are one or more P2P (Person to person) file sharing programs on your computer;

1. UTorrent

:note: Please note that using any form of peer to peer networking is highly dangerous, as there is no way to identify the source of the files you download, and you can expect an infestation of malware to occur.

Years ago P2P file sharing was safe and easy to do. And while the latter may still be so today, it is most certainly not safe anymore. A peer to peer program is a direct conduit into your computer. Most of these programs lack proper security measures and malware writers can easily breach them, and they continue to exploit the users of these programs to spread their malware.
As addition to that; while using a P2P program, your computer may be sharing way more than you want it to. There have been reports of people's passwords, personal, private and financial data being exposed via P2P networks, only because they had a peer to peer program installed, and lacked the skills to configure it properly.

Please read the following reports on the dangers of using peer to peer programs and file sharing.
Risks of P2P systems.
File sharing infects 500.000 computers.
File sharing dangers involve more than legal troubles.
Seattle man arrested for P2P identity theft.

I highly recommend that you uninstall the above mentioned P2P programs, as I can not guarantee your safety from malware if you leave them installed and the likelihood of (re)infection is very high to certain.
You can uninstall them by doing the following steps;

  1. Click on the :orb:.
  2. Click on Control Panel and under Programs click on Uninstall a program.
  3. Wait for the list to update, and when done, please right-click on the icon of the program(s) mentioned above and select Uninstall.
  4. Follow the on screen instructions, and when prompted, please restart your computer.

:info: When you have multiple P2P programs installed Click No - I will manually restart later when prompted to restart, and repeat steps three and four until all programs are uninstalled, and click Yes - Restart now when you have finished uninstalling the last P2P program.
:ar:If you choose not to uninstall them, please refrain from using any P2P program during this fix! Using them may interfere with any measures we may take.

----------

Please reduce the items that run at start up. You basically only need your anti virus to run at start up, all other programs are not necessary and can be removed from the start up list.
Check this tutorial to see how to add or remove start up items.

----------

Please uninstall your AV via the Control Panel and by using the tool from this list.

----------

Please download Microsoft Security Essentials from here;

  1. Download the file and save it to your desktop.
  2. Double click the file and follow the on-screen instructions.
  3. Restart your machine after installing MSE and please run a full scan and report back anything found.

----------

Please also download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here or here.

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Please uncheck the Enable free trail checkbox.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Full Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy & Paste the entire report between [code][/code] tags in your next reply.
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

----------

Please run a free online scan with the ESET Online Scanner

Note: You will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan.

  1. Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  2. Click Start.
  3. When asked, allow the ActiveX control to install.
  4. Click Start.
  5. Make sure that the options Remove found threats and the option Scan unwanted applications is checked.
  6. Click Scan (This scan can take several hours, so please be patient).
  7. Once the scan is completed, you may close the window.
  8. Use Notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt.
  9. Please copy and paste that log between [code][/code] tags in your next reply.

Good luck and keep us posted,
Nommy

Hello Tom982,

I bought the PC from someone who custom built it so windows was already installed. Do you see a problem with the windows installation?

Hello nommy,

Thanks again for your reply. I have followed the steps you detailed above.

I performed the benchmark test, do I need to post logs of it? The temperature leveld out around 78C so I stopped the test.

I will try and see if I get the error again.

Thank you!

It's counterfeit then, I'm afraid. The license in use is an MSDN license:

Code:
Validation Code: 0
Cached Online Validation Code: 0x0
Windows Product Key: *****-*****-JHMQ4-BXTWY-CVM9W
Windows Product Key Hash: 1pb4HTr8SKKWWEpMEp8OylsJAs8=
Windows Product ID: 00426-068-4588575-86622
Windows Product ID Type: 5
Windows License Type: Retail

This is indicated by the -068- in the Product ID. MSDN licenses come with very strict usage requirements and can't be purchased individually. What has happened here is that the seller (of the original Windows license, not necessarily the PC seller) has bought a MSDN subscription, which comes with multiple Windows 7 licenses (these are designed for developers so they can test their software on multiple computers without having to worry about buying Windows for each of them) and has sold these on individually, which is against the terms of use of a MSDN subscription as they are strictly not for resale. This is something we find a lot with people purchasing from eBay etc. but eventually your key will be blacklisted and Windows will say that it's not genuine. Are you still in contact with the seller? I'm not sure where the liability lies as this license is second hand, but either way you have purchased a counterfeit Windows license.

Tom

Tom982,

I was not aware of this, I am no longer in contact with the seller/builder. Is there anything I can do to rectify this legally? Do I just go buy a new copy of Windows 7?

Hmm, it's a tricky one really. Usually when an MSDN license comes up, the user has bought Windows off eBay and Microsoft tend to give them a new license for free, but I'm really not sure what to do here because the license is second hand. Actually, did he build this computer for you specifically? In my opinion, the outcome of this depends on whether we think the seller is the one with the MSDN subscription, installing dodgy copies of Windows on all of his builds, or whether this was a one off build and he bought the license on eBay and installed it for you, not knowing it's counterfeit. Any idea which of the two it may be?

Either way, I'll ask a friend to help here, he's our activation expert :)

Tom

The Key in use is an MSDN Key from a not-for-resale MSDN account.

Unless you are an MSDN subscriber, you are not entitled to use the Key – and whoever sold (or 'gave') it to you was not entitled to do so.

You need to claim an immediate refund from the vendor - do NOT accept the offer of a new key (all they are trying to do is to get past the 45-day claims window or avoid you sending the evidence of their crimes to the authorities)

As far as my original problem, I followed all of the steps here and now I crash MUCH faster. Before I could play for 10 minutes at least, sometimes an hour if I got lucky. Now I crash about 2 minutes in, very fast. Any ideas? I am at a loss here. I can't think of what has changed on my PC. I used to be able to play this game on this PC with no issues. It has been happening for a while but not as bad as it is now. Do I need a new video card?

As far as my version of Windows goes, I used to work for a well known retailer as a part time job. One of the people I worked with built this for me. From what he told me he did for a living (he also worked there part time as a 2nd job, same as me), my guess is he is the one who owned the MSDN subscription. I left that job years ago and did not keep in contact with this guy. What are my options?

Hello SirJorge,

Sorry for my late reply, it was night here and I was asleep:)

Please follow the BSOD Posting Instructions again and upload the created .zip file so that I can see the dump files.
Also, are you also getting a BSOD when you play other games, or is it only CoD?

Good luck and keep us posted,
Nommy

Technically, you do not have a license for Windows 7 and need to purchase your own license for whichever version of Windows you require.
Sooner or later, your current copy will be declared invalid - depending on the usage that the original owner put his/her licenses to.

So far this only occurs on CoD 4, which is a game I play often.

I updated the BIOS. Several drivers re-downloaded and I am able to boot up ok which is a relief. Always scared to update the BIOS.

I have attached the two files requested.

Just tried it again after the bios update and crashed about 5 minutes in, no blue screen where the pc restarts itself, just sits there in the black screen with all the sound garbled.

Hello SirJorge,

Have you checked the game for patches or updates? Maybe tried running it in compatibility mode?

----------

Please run Furmark again, but this time wait until the temperature reaches about 80 - 85 degrees before stopping it.

----------

If there are no updates or patches and Furmark runs without problems, I think that it might be something with the game itself instead of with your machine. If this is the case, please create a thread in the Gaming subforum asking them for advice on the matter. If you do that, please link this thread there for informational purposes.

Good luck and keep us posted,
Nommy

Hello Nommy,

The game is old so no new patches have been released. I am running the latest patches for it. I could try compatibility mode but I believe that runs the game at like 640x480 which is unplayable for me.

Ran Furmark for over 30 minutes, the temp did not exceed 77 degrees.

I will look at that forum you suggested. Thanks for your help.
