Hello

When i started a game of DOTA2 today, i got a BSOD and after that my PC would not start anymore. I am not 100% sure if i caught the correct error from the BSOD as after it happened, i couldn't get my PC to work. I managed to take a picture with my phone of the BSOD but i didn't manage to catch all the info, but someone here might be able to make sense of it. Currently, the PC only works in safeboot mode, when i try to start it normally, it never reaches the login screen for W7. I'll try to include what i know so far:

EDIT: i forgot to mention, i have not installed any new software or hardware, and this is the first BSOD i've got in about 2-3 years.

Trying to repair the system gave me the following errors

BCCode: d1
BCP1: D3AAFA50
BCP2: 00000002
BCP3: 00000008
BCP4: D3AAFA50
OS Version: 6_1_7601

My PC specs are

OS: Windows 7 Professional N 64bit
CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 965 3.4GHz
RAM: 4GB
GPU: Nvidia GTX460

In my Device Manager, under Other Devices, i have Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller with a yellow triangle with an exclemenation mark infront of it. When trying to view its properties, it shows me nothing. Trying to update the driver gives me nothing either.

Appreciate any help or information i can get!
Gabi~

Let's clear a few things up, you have experienced a 0x116 (always a GPU problem) and a 0xD1 (usually a driver) yes? Neither are showing in your logs. What is showing in your logs is a 0x101 which isn't giving away too much info. So, at a guess going on the STOP codes, update your nVidia driver to the latest version by downloading the latest version from here and follow NVIDIA Drivers - Avoid Problems for the cleanest possible install.

Please monitor your CPU and GPU temperatures and report them back.

   Warning
Please do not use CCleaner while you're experiencing BSODs. It will wipe the dump files from your machine.

Hello, sorry for the late reply.

Trying to follow the Nvidia uninstall guide, it won't let me uninstall most of the drivers in safe mode. I believe my temperatures are around 30-35C, looking at BIOS, other than that im not sure how i can monitor them because barely any program will start in safe mode.

Should i still try to do a clean install of the new driver?

EDIT: looking at the minidump files i received, they all seem to date back to 2013 for some reason, i'm not sure if that has anything to do with this though.

Hey Boozad, just here with a quick update.

I tried some stuff in the W7 trouble shoot guide, it did not help me, however it did give me another bluescreen, where i can definitly confirm 0x116, took a picture aswell. I'm not sure how the log collector works, but i made a new one just in case and will add it to this post.

I will uninstall the GPU through device manager and attempt to physically remove it from the PC now.

Also would like to quickly mention that the yellow triangle infront of the Universal Serial Bus seems to have a code 28 issue on PCI-bus 2, although no further information about it, and im not sure if that affects the GPU in anyway.

For the USB you'd need to download and install either the USB drivers or the chipset drivers for your motherboard from the manufacturer's support page, that should clear that problem up.

There are still no new dump files in your logs, only one form 2013.

  1. Open Advanced System Settings
  2. Click on Settings in Startup & Recovery
  3. Make sure both boxes indicated below are checked
  4. In the dropdown box ensure you're set to record Small Memory Dumps

I followed the instructions, however the crash dump won't be saved in the minidump folder (for some reason, there's only one 2013 dump there). instead it is saved in another folder called LiveKernelReports/WATCHDOG, i'm not sure if i can do anything with these crash dumps but these are the only ones i get from today.

Can you manually move them to the Minidump folder then re-run the DM Log Collector, see if that ctaches them.

I may not be around for a while so please bear with me and I'll get back to you as soon as I can.

Alright thanks!

I moved the files from 2015 to the mindump folder and ran the log collector again, it seemed to work i think.

Im not able to do a proper clean install of the driver because i cant boot in normal mode. I cant seem to figure out how to remove the gpu physically either (not sure IF IT is secured with some kind of pin or IF IT just sits really tight) to be able to run the PC Only from the motherboard.

Edit: Does IT matter IF i use dvi or vGA cable?

The cable shouldn't matter.

If you unplug the power from the GPU first there should be one or two screws in the bracket on the end of the card where the outputs are that screw into the I/O panel. Remove those. Finally, at the opposite end of the card near the HDD cage on the motherboard there is a clip that needs pushing down (pictured below), push it carefully but firmly down towards the motherboard. You should then be able to carefully wiggle the card free and out.

Yes, everything seems to work fine right now, getting some small error (DX9, DRDERR_NOTAVAILABLE) trying to play a movie (the movie still plays fine) but i'm guessing that's expected with the GPU mounted off.

Very likely. Just test the system for a couple of hours without the GPU then try reinstalling it ensuring all connections are securely made.

Okay i will let it run for a few hours and reinstall it and report back here. However, should i go ahead and do the clean install for nvidia driver now? Also the driver for the GPU that you linked earlier is from 2013, should i use that one to make the clean install, and then update to the latest nvidia drivers for 2015, or should i keep that driver?

Yes try the clean install and use that driver just to test stability. If all is good you can try updating to newer versions using the clean install method. If you find a problematic driver then roll back or skip it if a later one is available.
