Hi,

I'm new to this forum!

My computer is like 9 years old, and recently for the past week, I got this atikmpag.sys BSOD when:
1. I played Dota2 (not always like 3 times in 20 games). When I open dota2 and pass the intro video, I get a glitch real quick red screen.

2. 1-2 times Random black screen/no signal detected when entering windows during startup or doing nothing at all.

I ran through furmark and do a stress test, it crashed without showing any artifact after temp go above 84-86*C without having me able to stop

I tried reinstaling the same latest ATI Catalyst, replacing the atikmpag.sys, but still repeat problem

I would seek your advice/expertise to know whether this is a VGA going faulty or motherboard going faulty or windows 7 problem?

Thank you for your kind help in advance

Welcome to Sevenforums!

Your temps are WAY TO HIGH!

I'm running HeavyLoad right now CPU GPU combo test, on my quad core AMD with built in graphics. Test running now for 1 hr, temp 32-33 C on CPUID - HWMONITOR & 36 C on Core Temp

  1. Are your fans running?
  2. If so do they increase in speed as the temps rise?
  3. Are your vents free from lint & dust?

If yes to all those questions, being that your computer is 9 years old, your thermal paste is most likely dried/cracked & not contacting your CPU's, & or GPU's heat sink, if you have separate CPU GPU. I don't.
I used this and haven't had any issues -> Arctic Silver Thermal Paste
You can find it locally and not pay shipping. I purchased mine at a local computer shop.
As I stated my Quad core AMD is onboard graphics so I don't have dedicated GPU with fan and heat sink.

Hi Snick. I can't see the picture, which is high? CPU or GPU?
To answer your questions:

  1. Are your fans running? Yes
  2. If so do they increase in speed as the temps rise? Yes
  3. Are your vents free from lint & dust? I vaccum the dust I can see, but I think I need to invest in air duster to get those between the heatsink blades :(

My desktop has CPU with integrated Graphics, i.e. the graphics in onboard the CPU.

Below is a screenshot of CPUID HWMonitor, notice there is no GPU statistics as it is integrated onboard the CPU. Also notice the min/max temps, which are the default settings, on both Core Temp & CPUID HWMonitor. The max limits are way below the temps you indicated. Being that you answered yes to the fan questions, what is happening is the temp sensors are working and increasing the fan speed in an attempt to cool your processor(s). If the thermal paste has deteriorated, it shrinks, cracks and no longer provides heat transfer between the processor(s) and the heat sink(s). The heat sink is cooled but the connection (paste) is no longer connecting the heat sink and the processor(s).

If you vacuum the vents that should be sufficient, however a can of compressed air is always prudent for your computer maintenance toolbox & inexpensive too! You stated your computer is 9 years old. Don't know what thermal paste is on your processor(s) from factory, however, again your temps indicate you should replace it on both CPU & GPU if you have both & you answers to my questions regarding your fan(s).
I've used Arctic Silver 5 for years.

Don't you just love computers? SMH!

Run CPUID HWMonitor with Heavy Load test CPU & GPU checked in options.
Let it run for a while, 1/2 hour or more or until the temps level off.

I'm running Heavy Load again CPU & GPU checked in options, I'll edit this post & add a screenshot after it runs a half hour or so & you can look at the minimum & maximum temps.

Update after reapply thermal paste and blow air

A bit update here what I have done in the past week:

1. after I reapply thermal paste to both CPU and GPU, which both are basically cracking and not in a good condition. I also use air duster to blow air, oh my I can't believe how dirty those dusts are, even the dusts that clumped together as big as my thumb are all over the place when I blew them.

I think the temp is lower, playing the same dota2, I saw the max temp of my CPU only 50-58* compared to previous 55-63*C, and my GPU significantly dropped to max 58* from previous 65-70*

2. Use DDU to erase all ATI and GPU driver, redownload fresh from AMD ATI Radeon HD 6770 driver and install the driver.

3. Performed all CHKDSK, SFC /scannow, memtest, funmark (passed under 65* compared to previous fail at 80*), ASUS Diagnostic and several other diagnostics, all passed with flying colour

However, sadly the same atikmpag.sys BSoD still happened, on oct 13 and also today, when playing dota, any other idea on what I should do?

Have you tried seating the GPU in a different slot?
