BSOD playing games

Hi

I have just spend the last three weeks with a sound problem which BSOD my computer and worked it out to be the on board sound which i have now switched off and have re installed windows as it crashed so many times in the past and have installed a creative fx pcie card which apart from a pop every now and then it has been fine.

So now I think to myself lets play a game which was the reason why I updated my computer and now when I play a game a little while into the game cyrsis and far cry two the screen will go funny and make noises and then crash to a BSOD (the game cyrsis did play before without sound on the on board sound card) but I am thinking it might be the GPU or the mother board I have uploaded the dumps if anyone could please have a look, I am really pulling my hair out with this new computer and starting to wish i never upgraded. the temps of the gpu never go above 78c and i have three large fans in the case. so far it has not crashed in windows with out any game running.

Hi and welcome

I took a quick look only at the bottom DMP. This crash is a classic example of where one tool tells you one thing and a second tells you something different. In this case it really doesnt matter because both are related to you video driver

I would update the important drivers like bios, video, raid (if you have one),etc
If you are overclocking STOP

This could also be heat related so it would be a good idea to download an app (like cpu-z and gpu-z both free) to keep an eye on them

It woulnd hurt if you ran a system file check to verify and fix your system files
type cmd in search>right click and run as admin>sfc /scannow

Seems to be a display driver problem or your GPU is factory overclocked too much or just getting too hot causing the crash. It's a fairly common problem. Changing to a different GPU driver is the first thing you should try. The newer 195.62 driver might help.

I assuming you have the patches installed for both of those games, Crysis needs the 1.2 and the 1.2.1.

Both of those games tend to get a GPU very hot unless you have the fans cranked up. The Auto fan settings do not always work correctly. 78C should be ok though. Perhaps the factory overclock is a bit too aggressive? You can change the overclock using EVGA precision software.

You should download EVGA precision software, reduce the factory overclock and turn up the fan speed, watch the temps, play games, and see if it helps your situation.

Thanks zigzag3143 for looking at my mini dumps and confirming what I thought it was the GPU.

chev65 Thanks as well I downgraded the clock on the card with EVGA precision software from 670 core, shader 1485, mem 1180, fan auto TO 644 core, 1103 shader ,mem 1103, fan 52 and this allowed far cry 2 to play without any crashes on high game setting GREAT!! So I guess I need to just find the sweet spot. So far so good!!

I did notice with EVGA precision and GPU 0.37 they both said the default memory core speed was 1180 MHZ but on the XFX website is says it should be 2260 MHZ for a GTX 275 AHDA which seems a bit funny unless I am missing something???

It's just the way it is represented. As DDR or not.

1180 is exactly half of 2360. Perhaps you made a typo about 2260?

Either way, nothing to worry about.

Glad to hear you got it sorted out. I figured it was just a slightly too aggresive OC on the card because I have heard of others complaining about the same problem at the EVGA forum.
Yes memory core speed shows half the actual rate because of dual channel. Although half should be 1130MHz.

Update!!

What I did above worked but it did not allow me to play crysis at all without crashing to the desktop (it was only the sp demo as I have heard win 7 had problems so I wanted to play this before I bought the game) also in Farcry2 after about 5 - 10 min my screen would flicker once then carry on as normal and allow me to still play but the game after that point did not seem as fast.

When I checked the logs of GPU-Z I found that the GPU would be set at 400 max (had been set to 660) for the core and when I checked windows event viewer and GPUZ logs it would show that all the times I had crashed before or had a screen fickler the nvlddmkm.sys driver had crashed and re-started and the only way to get this up to the level I had set before was a reboot.

I have done some research on the internet and found if I went into the nividia control panel Power Management Mode and set the "prefer maximum performance tab from "adaptive" to "MAX" this allowed me to complete the demo of crysis and play farcry 2 with lots better performance (checked GPUZ and it kept 670 for the core which is what my cards factory overclock setting is) and I checked windows event viewer and there was no more nvlddmkm.sys driver had crashed.

So it looks like my card can do its full factory overclock and it is something to do with nividia drivers/auto adaptive parts and my computer???? Not really sure and the card still clocks its self back to 2d levels speeds when it’s not needed so at the moment there seems no loss. (Maybe a little more power used in older games?)

I posted just to ask if anyone has had the same problem/ tweaked this control panel setting??? And to let people know there was an easy fix which may help someone else.

Final update

A few weeks later the card went dead so it looks like in the end it was the card playing up (and with all the hassle of RMA'ing the old card I will never have a XFX card) I have a new card and all is working fine without any work arounds
