Solved BSOD, plus odd Windows error

For the last couple of weeks I have been getting BSODs. It never happens when I am on the computer, it is while it is sleeping. I come back to the PC and there is a message that it has recovered from a BSOD. The Zip file is attached.

Also, not sure if it is related, but I also started getting an error in the Message Center that says Clone DVD has an error and I should download the new version to resolve it. I do not have, nor have I ever had, that software on my PC. A search for "Clone" or "Elby" yields no results.

Thanks!

mezzy316, I will try to help and see what the problem is. Your files only had 1 dump file in them, and this is what it shows:

That is a driver that comes from Gear Software and also comes with iTunes. If you have any software by Gear, you may try to update the driver, If not, see if there is an update for iTunes. You may also see if this search helps with the software you have installed https://www.google.com/#q=elby+clonedrive

What's weird is I don't have any software from Gear or from Elby. That's why I don't know what drivers I would even update. I do have iTunes, but that's been on there always. Not sure why it would suddenly be causing BSODs.

Would you tell me, are you running your disk drives in Raid? And, have you reinstalled your operating system or is this how it came from HP?

There is a program DVD Clone and there is an Elby version as well as a Slysoft DVD Clone. I also found a response from iTunes technical support which outlined some steps to take. But they are pretty technical and require editing the registry. What it said was that some DVD burning programs have drivers that can conflict with the iTunes drivers. I have iTunes installed also, but have never had the problem you are having. I only have it installed because I messed up and bought my Granddaughter an Ipod. It has caused me all kinds of trouble up to and including a clean install. The program itself is good and OK, but Apple's implementation of it, causes all kinds of problems for me. However, I know it is a popular program and a lot of people use it. Also, how many hard drives do you have in your machine?

That being said, back to your issue. The initial dump file lists Cdrom as the problem and the Gear driver as the issue, which is your complaint. If you have 3rd party CD/DVD burning software installed, some cause conflicts with the ITunes drivers, the Gear being one of them. However, If I dig deaper in the stack, I find iaSror driver as causing some problems. It is an Intel raid driver but also contains the Intel AHCI driver. But, it also seems your sata controller in bios is set to raid. None of this would have anything to do with the errors you are seeing, I don't think. So, are you running raid? And is the system set up as HP set it up when you received it.

My system is running RAID 1 (mirroring). That is the way it came from HP. There are two 500GB drives (1TB total). I had to do a complete system recovery a couple of moths ago to try to resolve a random shut down issue. Turns out it was unnecessary at the problem was an overheating video card due to a bad fan. I have since replaced the video card. I don't have any 3rd party CD/DVD products installed, and nothing by Elby or SlySoft. I did just do an iTunes update this morning.

I have asked someone else to look at this thread. Raid is typically discouraged here, and raid 1 while mirroring is good, performance suffers with it. However, I see no reason the raid would have anything to do with you CD/DVD drive. I still believe it is some sort of driver conflict.

This GEARAspiWDM.sys may occur in your system in two ways ....

  • LightScribe by HP
  • iTunes
Both of the programs have some mechanism to monitor your Optical Disc Drive, which is often fatal.

Unfortunately I am not seeing any message about CloneDVD. CloneDVD is rightly not installed; but LightScribe uses the drivers from it.

Uninstalling LightScribe and iTunes will help you upto a level but not totally. Because it is almost evident that iaStor has important bearing on your issue. You need to remove it. Plus, RAID is not needed for you, as you have only one HDD.

To disable RAID, you need to boot into the BIOS. Advanced Mode. Then change the storage controller mode to AHCI or ATA/IDE whichever is available. Disable Intel Rapid Storage, Intel Smart Response or anything in this line. Save teh changes.

But you will not be able to boot back to windows, as windows can boot only with the storage controller mode on which it was actually installed. And we have changed it on purpose. And at this point you need to do a Clean Reinstall. Hopefully it will solve your issue.

Let us know the results.

Well, there are two of them, I assure you. I had to remove them both when I replaced the power supply. There may be other problems going on if it is only showing one. I went to HPs site and looked up my original order. This is what it shows.

"500GB RAID 1 (2 x 500GB SATA HDDs) - data security"

For the past couple weeks I have been also getting a message when I come back from sleep/hibernate that says something to the effect of "a storage device has been detected...". I tried to write down the whole message last time it showed up but it disappeared too quickly. I'll try to screen cap it next time.

I would suggest you to get rid of RAID1. Use the other HDD for backing up the data.

I noticed that the drivers for the hard drive/RAID were quite old (from 2009). I updated them from v8 to v12. I also uninstalled LightScribe. However I have since had more BSODs. I have attached a new file.

I assume you meant to say "isn't" needed. However, it is needed if I stick with RAID, correct? I know that isn't popular, but I like the auto backup and I don't understand why now, after two years of working just fine, there is suddenly an issue.

When I do a search for "iastor.sys" it finds 21 items in a variety of folders:

iaStor.sys x 4
iaStorV.sys x 9
iaStorF.sys x 4
iaStorA.sys x 4

Do they all need to go?

Thanks. I really do appreciate the help.

They all are the various components of a same driver. Intel Rapid Storage/Intel Matrix storage.

But they will not go if you dont disable RAID.

And you will not be able to boot into windows after disabling RAID.

mezzy316, I am not sure what brand of hard drive you have, but I think it is prudent to test the drives with the manufacturer's diagnostic test for DOS. In post #19 you mentioned that you were receiving a notice that a drive was coming online. That should not happen in a raid array and indicates that it is likely a drive is failing.

If you only have the 2 hard drives, one coming back online means the raid controller, iaStor has dropped a drive from the array, because it has detected the drive not responding, thus breaking the array. When it starts responding properly, the controller puts it back in the array, but then the array has to rebuild. That is quite possibly the cause of your issues, but if it is possible a drive may be failing I would think you would want to know before it fails completely. I would further recommend you back up your data before testing, which is always a good idea before performing any test on a hard drive. This will tell you how to perform the test with Seatools for DOS which is Seagate's test but can be used on any hard drive. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/313457-seatools-dos-windows-how-use.html run the short test and the long test on both drives.

I think there is something going on with the hard drive(s). Now I have been getting "SATA disk on Controller 0, Port Unknown: Detected" and also "SATA Unknown Disk: Removed". They alternate back and forth. I also got an error that iaStor had stopped responding and was shutting down, which I did not get before. I have only received that message once.

I do have Hardware Diagnostic Tools by PC-Doctor (it came with the machine). However, every time I try to run it I get a message that says "Device Discovery Error. Your system was busy performing other tasks when attempting to collect information. If there is an error, restart the application. If the error persists, restart the system." I don't have anything open so I'm not sure when else I can close. Restarting doesn't help. I will have to try the Seagate test, although from what I can tell, the manufacturer of the drives is Intel.

Mezzy316, I am not familiar with that program, but I am familiar with several like it. The overwhelming majority of them do more harm than good and should not be used. That is why in the post above yours I recommended you run your hard drive manufacturer's diagnostic tool on all of your drives. I believe I said that it sounds like one or maybe both drives are failing. I would suggest that you back up all of your personal data now, then run the manufacturer's diagnostic tests, both the short drive self test and the long drive test.

Using Speccy, it says the hard drive manufacturer is Intel. When I look at their site, they don't have any hard drive diagnostic tools. In fact, they reference the Seagate software. I downloaded the Seagate product and ran it. The drives passed both the short and long tests.

You did well then. I can assure you the hard drives are not Intel, they don't make hard drives, just SSDs. Well, a lot of other stuff too, but no hard drives. But, that is good news another thing not to worry about.
