Solved BSOD, plus odd Windows error

So I was able to uninstall Intel RST without an issue, but it explicitly states that it doesn't uninstall the drivers. iaStor.sys is still on my system because it is still the named driver, however it looks like that is the name of the Intel driver whether it is RAID or AHCI. It is listed as an AHCI driver right now. Should I uninstall the Intel driver to get rid of iaStor.sys and use the general MS driver, or leave it as is?

In my opinion, I would leave it just the way it is. I use IRST (Intel Rapid Storage not Rapid Start) on my computer and have no problems with it. If you start having issues with it, then uninstall the drivers. I do believe you can 'roll back' the driver in device manager to MSAHCI if you so desire. But, I would give it time and see if it causes problems for you.

IRST is Intel's Raid driver, but it also contains Intel's AHCI driver and is the only way to get it that I am aware of. I have an SSD and I get significantly better performance with IRST than with MSAHCI. Others have said they do not. Perhaps it simply depends on your system and what software you use. I have never had a problem with it, but others have. If it gives you problems, get rid of it. That's my opinion.

Okay, I'll leave it as-is and see how it does. I was just concerned because aiStor is what was causing the BSODs. Hopefully breaking the RAID fixed it. Thanks for all your help!

Well I just went to go on the computer and it was on the logon screen. Looks like it did a BSOD and restarted. Here is the dump file. Notice there are probably a lot of them, but the only one that really matters is from today.

Mezzy, this time I am getting several drivers

Code:

    Translations: 0000.04b0 0000.04e4 0409.04b0 0409.04e4

MpFilter.sys is the Windows anti Malware

Also

Code:
*** WARNING: Unable to verify timestamp for [COLOR=red]GEARAspiWDM.sys[/COLOR]
*** ERROR: Module load completed but symbols could not be loaded for GEARAspiWDM.sys
Implicit thread is now fffffa80`09a6db50
Probably caused by : [COLOR=red]cdrom.sys[/COLOR] ( cdrom!DeviceSendRequestSynchronously+c9 )

GEARAspiWDM is CD-ROM Class Filter Driver by Gear Software.
Also comes with iTunes should be able to be updated at http://www.gearsoftware.com

The CD-Rom is a windows driver Then there were also 2 references to iaStor, our old friend.

Try to go to device manager, IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers look for the AHCI controller. If it is still the Intel AHCI controller, right click it, select properties, click on the driver tab, and click on the 'roll back driver' then restart the system. I would strongly recommend creating a restore point before doing that http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/697-system-restore-point-create.html

Well, it just happened again, another BSOD. I attached the new dump file.
View attachment 327442

I looked at the driver for the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers and it is the Intel Controller (iaStor). However, the "Roll Back Driver" option is greyed out (see image).
View attachment 327440

I also looked at the driver for the CD-ROM and there are three entries in there: cdrom.sys, GEARAspiWDM.sys, and iaStorF.sys (see second image).

What should I do?

Yes, I did. I uninstalled the software. But during the uninstall it tells you that it does not uninstall the drivers, which I believe is why iaStor is still there.

OK. Create a restore point and make sure you have the installation disk or the repair disk. Go back to the properties, driver tab and instead of roll back driver, select uninstall driver. You will have to reboot, then on start up it will say installing drivers, then require another restart. restart and go back to IDE ATA/ATAPI and see what driver you have. I just tried it 3 times on my machine, and it kept installing the same driver on restart. But, I haven't uninstalled IRST.

Sorry, I think I am. Doh! There is one from this morning and one from tonight. I thought they were both from tonight. I guess the second one didn't create a dump file?

Anyway, I did what you said and uninstalled the driver and rebooted. It installed the driver and I rebooted again. Unfortunately it's the same driver, our friend iaStor.sys. One question, when I clicked uninstall, it had a box to check if you wanted to "delete the driver software for this device". I wasn't sure what to do so I didn't check it. When it was installing after the first reboot it looked like it was downloading it anyway, from Windows update.

If you have made the Restore Point, uninstall the driver software, check the box. and try that. You should have MSAHCI if you installed in AHCI mode. Windows Installer installs that. When you install IRST, it changes the AHCI driver from MSAHCI to IaStor. So you should have MSAHCI in your Drivers. So, if you installed in AHCI mode, if you uninstall iaStor it should revert to MSAHCI.

I hope I explained that correctly. As I recall, you were in Raid mode, but I don't recall if you did a reinstall in AHCI mode. If you didn't, navigate to C:/Windows/System32/Drivers and search from the top right search box for MSAHCI.

Well I checked the box and uninstalled it and it installed iaStor again. However, I found that if I choose "Update Driver"--->Browse my computer--->Pick from a List, that I can choose the Microsoft version (I think that's what it is).

View attachment 327447

What's also interesting is that when I went in here before I did the uninstall, there were three different versions of iaStor and now there is only one.

So should I do this and pick the Standard controller?

No Problem. It should do fine as long as there are AHCI drivers in the OS. However, it is always a good idea to back up your personal files before doing such things. It really should be no problem, but you can never be sure. Also, make sure you have a restore point made, just in case. I was wondering what happened last night. When I didn't hear from you, I was worried that something may have gone wrong. I'm happy you wrote this morning. Thanks!
