- x86 (32-bit) or x64 ? 64 bit
- the original installed OS on the system? Windows 7 Professional

Hi there! Hope you can help me as this forum looks extremely useful! I'm having alot of locking up/looping sound on my computer in the last few days as well as two BSODs (one memory management and the other paged fault in non paged area). I haven't found the source so I have turned to you guys.

Thanks heaps in advance!

Hi Jack and welcome

The newest of these was memory corruption probably caused by your symantec.

I would

1-run memetest

Download a copy of Memtest86 and burn the ISO to a CD using Iso Recorder or another ISO burning program.

Boot from the CD, and leave it running for at least 5 or 6 passes.

Just remember, any time Memtest reports errors, it can be either bad RAM or a bad motherboard slot.

Test the sticks individually, and if you find a good one, test it in all slots.

2-remove symantec and replace with Microsoft security essentials.

Download and run the Norton Removal Tool to uninstall your Norton product | Norton Support
http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/

3-run a system file check to verify and repair your OS files.

Run a system file check to verify and repair your system files.
To do this type cmd in search, then right click to run as administrator, then
SFC /SCANNOW

Read here for more information http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker.html

Let us know the results from the report at the end.

Thanks for your quick reply! I have removed Norton (took a while, had to remove some old registry entries left over from Norton Utilities before I could remove it, but all done now) and installed Microsoft Security. I did a system file check multiples times over the last few days while removing programs and all came up fine.

Since then I have had the computer lock up twice (frozen, sound looping over 1/4 second).

Did Memtesting:

I have 2 x 2GB sticks of RAM in slots 1 and 3 of the motherboard.

Test Stick 1 in Slot 1: PASSED
Test Stick 1 in Slot 3: PASSED
Test Stick 2 in Slot 1: PASSED
Test Stick 2 in Slot 3: PASSED

All tests were one stick at a time, and all did over 7 passes each

Should I check the other slots?

I was wondering if it is something to do with my BIOS as when I first built the computer, I had to set all the BIOS settings manually to achieve stability because the motherboard never recongised them. And since I didn't really know what I was doing, could it be because of a wrong setting? Do you know of any guides that explain how to set these settings properly?

What should be my next steps?

Thanks heaps,

Jack

W7 BSOD -Why else am I here? :D

- Windows 7 Pro 64 bit
- Original OS, with clean install of it about 3 months ago
- Full Retail
- Parts about 2 years old
- Originally installed 2 years ago, but did clean wipe so only 3 months old

BSOD happened after closing Bad Company 2 with Steam (have played it hundreds of times with no problems)

Other odd computer behaviour: Computer stopping to spin up hard drives alot, ie every time I start playing BC2, it will hang for 10 seconds then be fine for the whole gaming session. During that 10 seconds I can hear all the drives spin up. Sometimes causes the music to stutter as well.

Thanks in advance! You guys do an awesome service!

These two were a month apart and related to your video driver. I would re-install just the driver using this.

When upgrading your graphic driver you MUST remove all traces of the current driver. In order to do that we recommend using Guru3D - Driver Sweeper

Or if the above doesnt work for you. Phyxion.net - Driver Sweeper

When it is removed then download and install the fresh copy.

and you should also remove this

Please remove any CD virtualization programs such as Daemon Tools and Alcohol 120%.

They use a driver, found in your dmp, sptd.sys, that is notorious for causing BSODs.

Use this SPTD uninstaller http://www.duplexsecure.com/en/downloads

when you're done you can use this Freeware MagicISO Virtual CD/DVD-ROM(MagicDisc) in its place. http://www.magiciso.com/
