BSoD Problems

Hello. I've been having BSoD problems with a laptop that I have purchased recently. The laptop was purchased just over a month ago, and since then I have had about 7 Blue Screens of Death. The BSoD's have occurred whilst I have been doing various things, like browsing the web and playing games, so as far as I know there isn't a common program running at the time of the crashes. Usually it is just the one BSoD and then nothing for days, although on two occassions I have had 2 BSoD's on the same day. There does seem to be roughly ten days between the days of the BSoD, although I'm not sure if that's a relevant point.

OS Info -
- Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
- It was the original OS installed on the laptop
- It was already installed when I received the laptop
- I received the laptop 32 days ago, so I assume that's how old the system is
- And I also assume 32 days is how old the OS installation is

Hi, evilwart; and welcome to the forum. Sorry you are having problems. I looked at your four most recent dumps. All four indicate memory corruption. Unfortunately, the dumps do not point to specific causes; therefore you will have to troubleshoot by a process of elimination.

Out of date drivers can and do cause memory corruption and BSOD's. I find the following outdated drivers loaded on your system. Update these drivers or uninstall the software they are associated with. I suggest that you uninstall the Egis Tec software.

Go to C:\Windows\System32\drivers and rename PxHlpa64.sys to PxHlpa64.BAK
This will break your CD/DVD program, but can easily be renamed after we've finished.

Either upgrade or uninstall the Egis Tec software. Reboot and let's see if this helps your system. Update us and let us know. If you get another BSOD, upload it and we will go from there.

Your drivers appear to be up to date. I recommend that you run Driver Verifier. Closely follow the instructions in this tutorial: Driver Verifier - Enable and Disable. Run Driver Verifier for about 36 hours of computer operation and use your computer normally. Verifier will trigger a BSOD if it finds a faulty driver. Upload any and all Driver Verifier enabled dumps. Hopefully, the dumps will point to the offending driver.

I created a System Repair disc and Restore Point and then enabled Driver Verifier. When i rebooted, it said windows was unable to start and I had to use my restore point to fix it.

You can try Driver Verifier again; but usually when that happens, it indicates a hardware problem. I suggest that you test your RAM with Memtest following the instructions in this tutorial: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/105647-ram-test-memtest86.html. Run Memtest from a cold boot after you computer has been off for at least an hour or two. Let it run for a minimum of 7 passes. This will take 6-8 hours. If you see errors you can stop the test. Post back with your results.

I don't know if that's helpful or not. I also had another BSoD the morning before I did the memtest, so I've attached a new zip file with the newest dump file.

The fact that Memtest shows errors indicates that you have a RAM problem. That problem can be one or more bad sticks of RAM, RAM sticks incompatible with each other, RAM incompatible with the motherboard, a bad RAM slot, or a bad memory controller. Remove all of your RAM sticks except the one in the first slot. Run Memtest on that stick. If it passes, remove it, mark it as good and test another stick in the same slot. Repeat until you have tested all of your sticks. If you find a bad stick, mark it as bad. Run your computer with just one RAM stick and see how it does.

Next take a known good stick and test each of your RAM slots with this stick. I know this is time consuming and tedious. If you find a bad slot, you will know not to use that slot. Post back with your results.

I did look at your dump and it is memory management error. It does not indicate any specific cause.

Be sure to upload any Verifier enabled dumps. If the dumps point to Windows system files, you can stop Verifier.

I am not familiar with your laptop. Many laptops have a door on the bottom that gives access to the memory without having to take the laptop apart. If your computer is still under warranty, you don't want to take it apart. And, if it is, I would let Acer deal with the RAM problem.

I don't lightly recommend flashing the BIOS. If not done correctly, it can turn you computer into a useless paper weight. There is a definite risk involved, albeit not a great risk. Generally, I recommend flashing the BIOS when the BIOS update addresses a specific problem that the computer is experiencing or when the manufacturer recommend the BIOS upgrade. Since I do not know what the latest addresses or corrects, I can't give you an answer. There are some BIOS updates that correct memory problems. Without all of the facts, I recommend that you solve the RAM problem first.

After 36 hours of the Driver Verifier no BSoD.

I think messing with the RAM may invalidate the warranty, so I'm gonna get Acer to look at the laptop next week.

You are certainly welcome for the help. No BSOD's using Verifier is a good sign. It means Verifier found no faulty drivers. Good job of running it.

If there is a seal on the door that opens to the RAM, you definitely do not want to break it. If there is no seal, accessing the RAM probably does not invalidate the warranty. That said, as inconvenient as it may be, since the computer under warranty, I would let Acer handle it. I think you have made a good decision. Acer will also flash the BIOS if that is necessary. Please post back and update us after Acer looks at the RAM and tell us what they have done.
