Crashes indicate your Intel(R) Matrix Storage Manager Driver. I would recommend updating it from Intel® Driver Update Utility.

Hi - thanks for getting back. I deliberately disabled the Ethernet Controller as my wife (who owns the laptop) only uses the wi-fi connection from the router. I will re-enable it.

Will also look to update the Intel Matrix Storage Manager Driver.

Again, many thanks.

An update.

Started the laptop in safe mode and went on to the Intel site. It failed to recognize and update was available for the Intel Storage Driver. Downloaded the update manually and applied the update via - Control Panel - Device Manager.

File search Drive C: reveals

c:\Program Files\Intel\Intel Storage Manager\Driver\Iastor.sys 13/10/2009 331,288

c:\Program Files\Intel\Intel Storage Manager\Driver64\Iastor.sys 13/10/2009 409.624

c:\Windows\System32\Drivers\Iastor.sys 17/10/2011 462,104

I assume (or hope) the update has been applied.

Hi - the revamped driver seemed to sort things out for a while then there was often what appeared to be intense disk activity for no apparent reason but at least the laptop did not throw up a BSOD.

Decided to run Seatools from Seagate which has indicated that the disk is on it's way out. So no doubt this would explain the random but becoming more frequent BSOD issues in addition to the outdated Intel driver.

Maybe Seatools will be able to isolate the 'damaged' sectors but in my experience this would only be a temporary fix so have ordered a new replacement disk. Will pop the old one away, may need it one day.

Many thanks for your help over this especially with the required updated Intel driver.
