My computer blue screened while running Kingdoms of Amalur. During kingdoms of amalur the whole game was missing sound, the image slowly deteriorated and lagged and then the pc blue screened.

Before this it has been having strange issues where it starts to stutter, the performance deteriorates and results in a crash if i do not restart. often restarting will fix the problem, sometimes it starts again however. I notice first the sound starts to crackle then the image stutters, then it begins to freeze with grinding sound, then it eventually crashes. It also has these issues when watching movies online (for example on youtube). It means I have to start a game, wait for the deterioration, restart, then play again and usually it works for the rest of the evening.

When looking in resource monitor it appeared maybe the pagefile was thrashing my hard drive so I do not know if this is the cause. Also, event viewer shows boot degredation warnings constantly but I do not know how to solve this. I believe all these issues may be related.

I hope you can help me with my problem.

I don't see any antivirus installed, or probably missed it? Let me know what antivirus you are using. Many members here suggest MSE as the most compatible antivirus for window 7, and I use it myself! :ar: Microsoft Security Essentials - Free Antivirus for Windows

After doing the above, Stress test your hardware with: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/100352-hardware-stress-test-prime95.html

Hello,

Thank you for replying. I removed the software as suggested and will perform a reboot in a moment to see if I get similar boot degradation errors. I am running McAfee Internet Security. Very occasionally my PC seems to think I have no security software installed, however I usually get these messages after a crash. The Security Software appears to run normally most of the time.

Thanks

You can keep MSE for a test (Also run full scan if possible to make sure you're free of viruses)

Keep us informed of the hardware stress test

Hello, Which test did you want me to run? I have a choice of:

1. Small FFT's
2. In place large FFT's
3. Blend

I also replaced McAfee with the one you mentioned and ran a full scan, no viruses were detected.

I was wondering if my issue may be memory related however. I noticed sometimes the pagefile shows unusually large activity in resource monitor and am suspicious that it may be thrashing the hard drive. Also, sometimes the file mentioned in the boot degradation errors I told you about shows svchost, which I read online is linked to the pagefile. Finally, I am getting a new error in event viewer- error 500- which is a video memory degradation error, however I read online that this can appear if the RAM is having issues. I wondered therefore, if all three of these errors are linked and if perhaps the issues I am receiving are due to faulty RAM?

As I don't know much about these things though I figure you guys are better with that info than I am!

Hello,

1. I have 3 sticks of Ram, 2 GB each.

2. I have had the system since just before Christmas 2009, so not even 3 years old yet.

3. Nothing is overclocked.

At first insert one stick at a time and see how your computer performs. Test the same way with rest of the sticks.
Then run the memory test.

Hello,

Thanks I will try the memory test either tonight or tomorrow night and get back to you.

The prime test ran for an hour and a half on blend, conducted 33 tests, and reported no errors or warnings.

Hello again,

The memory tests came up fine. The boot errors were still present when testing each stick individually, and memtest found no issues.

I also have a whole host of other issues appearing in event viewer around the time I ran those stress tests. Is that normal?

Also, I am noticing a huge difference in my computer's boot times now which I couldn't see before, particularly when shutting down. It takes a noticeably long time to shut down (at least 60-90 seconds), whereas before I had the boot errors but could not really tell that it had degraded. This extended shut down has only begun over the last few days so I cannot really put my finger on the cause, although the boot errors in event viewer have been present for a long time now.

If that video memory degradation error is true, is it possible for a graphics card to cause boot errors like that? My only other thought personally is a motherboard issue? I have no idea now.

Also, something else I noticed was strange. I ran a a pc health check from the control panel in windows, and it said no antivirus was detected, yet when I open action center it shows that microsoft security essentials is turned on and running fine.

Somewhere within my OS there seems to be a conflict between whether I am running antivirus or not, because you asked me this as well.

Not since the last one during Kingdoms of Amalur.

Do you mean BSOD errors in event viewer, or actual BSOD on screen?

Alright

Run this test CPU stress as the last dump has pointed towards a failing CPU.

Please go through it very carefully before you start and you can use Speccy to monitor your temps during this test

Let us know how it goes

WHen I look at HWiNFO64 it shows the CPU idling at about 50-54 degrees C. I have an intel i7 920 CPU. ,After reading that page it said to look for the Tcase number as the maximum temp, which says 67.9 degrees C.

( here is the link I followed to my processer: ARK | Intel® Core )

I think this means It will be unsafe to run the test because I do not have a difference of 20 degrees.

Also, isn't 50-54 degrees idle a little hot...?

In fact everything is running a bit hotter than normal. GPU is running around 60 degrees it normally goes down to about 45 idle.
