Solved BSOD, Scrambled screen ... Help!

Please Help!

I have been getting BSOD's due to Kernel Data In-Page Errors and also a scrambled screen - followed by a crash and restart due to I don't know what. It varies from once or twice a week to several times a day.

I have run Kaspersky Rescue Disk, AVG, chkdsk and every other fix known to Google. I believe the In-Page error may be due to a hardware issue bit it is beyond me to identify it.

My system is a Toshiba notebook A200, 3 years old. The OEM OS was Windows Vista which I upgraded to Win 7 (purchased the upgrade disk) about 5 months ago. It was a couple of months after the upgrade to Win 7 that the problems started. I have tried everything within my limited knowledge to fix it.

Now my wifes 2 year old HP notebook has started doing a similar thing about a month after I upgraded that from Vista to Win 7.

The data files are attached. I'd greatly appreciate any advice here as I am about ready to take the sledgehammer solution.

Hi, MrMac; welcome to the forums. I'm sorry you are having problems. Your problems are hardware/hardware related. For future reference, always do a clean install rather than an upgrade when ever possible. Upgrade installations often have problems.

Error code 9F, DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE. Caused by a device driver.

Error code 7A (2X), KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR. Usual causes: Memory, Paging file corruption, File system, Hard drive, Cabling, Virus infection, Improperly seated cards, BIOS, Bad motherboard, Missing Service Pack.

Error code 23, FAT_FILE_SYSTEM. Usual causes: Disk corruption, insufficient physical memory, Device driver, Indexing, Resident antivirus, backup, defrag programs, Disk/Drive failing/failure.

You may have a couple of problems. To begin your troubleshooting, recommend that you uninstall AVG using this removal tool: Tool (32bit). AVG is known to cause BSOD's on some Win 7 systems. Download and install Microsoft Security Essentials in its place. If you have Identity Protection installed remove it with this tool: Tool.

Because of error codes 7A and 23, I suggest you run Check Disk.

Run CHKDSK /R /F from an elevated (Run as adminstrator) Command Prompt. Please do this for each hard drive on your system.
When it tells you it can't do it right now - and asks you if you'd like to do it at the next reboot - answer Y (for Yes) and press Enter. Then reboot and let the test run. It may take a while for it to run, but keep an occasional eye on it to see if it generates any errors. See "CHKDSK LogFile" below in order to check the results of the test.

Elevated Command Prompt:
Go to Start and type in "cmd.exe" (without the quotes)
At the top of the Search Box, right click on Cmd.exe and select "Run as administrator"

CHKDSK LogFile:
Go to Start and type in "eventvwr.msc" (without the quotes) and press Enter
Expand the Windows logs heading, then select the Application log file entry.
Double click on the Source column header.
Scroll down the list until you find the Chkdsk entry (wininit for Windows 7) (winlogon for XP).

I also find outdated drivers loaded on your system; those in red font are quite obsolete. Older third party drivers can and do cause memory conflicts and BSOD's. Some of them are XP drivers. Update or eliminate the following drivers.

Uninstall AVG and update/uninstall the above drivers. This will be a lot of work and if you need help, please ask.

It it were my computer and I knew is was Win 7 capable, I would do a clean install as explained in the tutorial linked below. I would not install any old software unless I knew it to be Win 7 compatible.

Thankyou so much CarlTR6. Seriously, I would never have resolved this on my own. As you mention, I have a lot of work to do and it is going to take a while.

Below are the Chkdsk log data as requested. I have run it several times a week since the problem first appeared and it seems to resolve it for a few days to a week, then it goes downhill again.

I understand from what you are saying that a clean install of Win 7 and subsequent installation of only Win 7 compatible programs is a better way to go than to try and resolve each issue that you have identified. Did I read that corectly?

Tews is spot on. It will take two to fours hours to do a reformat and a clean install. You are probably looking at 8-16 hours to hunt drivers, download, install, reboot and then go on to the next driver and repeat the process. Do you know that your computer is Win 7 capable? You can use the Windows Upgrade Advisor Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor - Download - Microsoft Windows to check. Let us know what you decide to do and if you need help. Also, you mentioned that your wife's computer was acting similarly to yours. You can start another thread and upload her files and we will glad take a look at those, too.

Thanks Guys. So far I have removed AVG and installed Microsoft Security Essentials. I have also installed new Toshiba drivers using a tool on the Toshiba website. So far so good and no BSOD's for 2 weeks.

As much as I would love to do a complete fresh install, I have 6 week old twins at home so I will never have the time for it

Thank you for posting back. I am glad to hear that you have not had a BSOD for a couple of weeks. Great news! Twins, eh. Congratulations. They will keep you well occupied and out of trouble.

One thing you can do in your spare time (I realize there is little of that) is to uninstall the obsolete software with which the drivers in red are associated. That will greatly reduce future problems.
