BSOD seemingly random

Hello,

My Laptop has been crashing at what seems to be random times for a few months now. Most of the time I will return to my laptop, which was sitting idle, to find that it has crashed, and restarted. It has crashed while gaming, watching movies, photo editing, or just sitting idle. Sometimes I get a BSOD, other times it just goes black and restarts.

System came with Windows 7 from Dell, but I have done a full reformat of the hard drive and reinstalled via the Dell provided system restore DVD after getting a nasty virus 6 months ago. The system is about 1.5 years old, with no known issues other than the random crashes.

After reading other posts, I noticed that Daemon Tools, and Avast seemed to pop up quite a bit as problem programs. I just removed both of these programs, but I am not sure if that is the root of the problem. Thanks for you time.

Literally all of these (31) were related to USBPORT.SYS

These were Related to usbehci.sys EHCI eUSB Miniport Driver from Microsoft.

I would start by running a system file check to verify the OS.

Run a system file check to verify and repair your system files.
To do this type cmd in search, then right click to run as administrator, then
SFC /SCANNOW

It may need to be run up to three times before sucessful

Thank you for the response Zigzag.

I ran a system file check three times, and found no integrity violations.

I followed the directions for the generic USB fixes, there were quite a few "faded" USB devices, I uninstalled all of them, and deleted the INFCACHE.1 file. Hopefully this solves my problem. I will report back if I receive more crashes.

Jason Good luck and just a bit for interesting background.

I had exactly the same problem on Win 8 and after 2 weeks of pulling my hair out I did the generic fix and it worked for me as well.

Had a few more crashes over the last couple days. Same symptoms as before. If it is USBPORT.SYS again, do you have any other suggestions for me to try?

One glaring thing I dont know how I missed sptd.sys

Please remove any CD visualization programs such as Daemon Tools and Alcohol 120%.

They use a driver, found in your dmp, called sptd.sys, that is notorious for causing BSODs.

Use this SPTD uninstaller DuplexSecure - Downloads DuplexSecure - FAQ

when you're done you can use this Freeware:

MagicISO Virtual CD/DVD-ROM
(MagicDisc)

in its place

Using MagicISO to create ISO image files

I had uninstalled Daemon before my first post, but I didn't use the SPTD uninstaller before my initial post. I used the SPTD uninstaller this morning, hopefully that fixes the problem. Thanks again for the quick response.
