Hello Everyone I am new to this forum.
wave.gif

I have a SONY VAIO (VGN-NW120J/S) that is currently running windows 7.

Computer has been running slow with slow startups particularly in the last year. Sometimes when i lock laptop and walk away when i come back it has been restarted or shutdown.

Computer began to run poorly for about 20 minutes, Started to browse msconfig to look for anything weird then computer locked up for about 10 seconds and I got a blue screen and a restart, will not make it to log in screen. Could not write down the codes with pen and paper. Now the bluescreen says UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME every time. Made it past log in screen a few times but screen only shows black.

Crashes every time during startup but when trying to boot in safe mode i noticed it has a hangup on CLASSPNP.SYS for a long time then it crashes. Startup repair didn't fix anything. Ran chkdsk and it locked up. ran CHKDSK again later on and got a new beginning message saying it needed to check for consistency and it deleted a whole bunch of things now it runs every time i start up in normal mode? ran memory diagnostic 2passes didn't see any problems. Ran startup repair again after chkdsk deleted things, startup repair took a very long time. All the tests said completed successfully error code 0x0 the last thing on the list said :

Unspecified changes to system config might have caused a problem.
Repair Action: System Files Integrity Check & Repair
Result: Failed Error Code: 0x45d

I was also able to write this down on a piece of paper.

Problem Signature:
Problem Event Name: Startup Repair Offline

Not really sure what to do at this point, any help would be really great!!

Changing Ownership Of Folders On A Hard Drive

I'm having trouble with my Sabrent USB Sata/IDE adaptor. I'm trying to get files and folders off of a hard drive. I can't get my computer to recognize the hard drive most of the time. When it does recognize it, i can't get to any of my important files. As far as i can get into it is Users then when i click my folder "Tim" windows explorer locks up. I tried several times to change ownership of the folders but it always hangs on a random file everytime and never finishes. I can't cancel because that never finishes. The end result is usually windows explorer freezing up.

I'm i doing something wrong here?

I had no problem at all using this cable on an old IDE drive.

Hi Tim91,

I'm sorry no one's gotten around to helping you since your original post - it happens from time to time as this is a very busy place. However we do all we can and generally don't leave anyone hanging if possible. :)

Your case sounds an awful lot like a failing harddisk (although malware is another possibility). It would be time to run a full HD diagnostic using the corresponding software provided by your harddisk's manufacturer. If you don't know who made it, you can visit the Seagate website and download SeaTools for DOS which will handle any HD.

You'll need to find a way to run it from within a rescue environment such as an USB stick or your Windows rescue disc or install DVD. Nevermind! SeaTools for DOS is a self-booting image you can burn to a CD and then start from there.

If you need more assistance please don't hesitate to post back.

Sounds like a HD problem rather than the interface. (Tim91, I just replied to your other post about a similar problem - the same problem?)

Suggest you avoid opening the drive through Explorer and just open an administrative command prompt. (Use Search in the Start menu, type cmd and then rightclick on the entry it finds and "Run as Administrator".)

Once there, type chkdsk /r X: where X is the drive letter of your external HD. This will check the filesystem and then scan the entire disk surface for sector errors and try to fix them or mark them as unusable. This may take several hours, but you're free to use your computer in the meantime until chkdsk finishes.

Let us know what the results are.

Well tonight I had trouble running Chkdsk. It kept getting hung up at random points and sitting. Every test I ended up pulling the usb plug ending it and trying again. Not much success Chkdsk never takes this long. I can try again tomorrow here is what i got tonight.

That sounds almost certainly like impending HD failure.

However, to completely exclude the possibility that it's a problem with the SATA/IDE-to-USB adapter, you could try to connect this SATA harddrive internally by opening up your PC and plugging it directly into one of the motherboard's SATA ports and connecting power to it. (Obviously, don't do this with the PC turned on.)

If you're then able to read the drive OK, it's the USB adapter. If it fails again, I hope you can afford a new harddisk. :(

This won't cause any problems will it? Can I do this with a 2.5" drive?

Unspecified changes to system config might have caused a problem.

I read that 0x45d error is a device I/O error. Is this true? I was wondering if this would have any relation to my bsod "UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME" and also my problem with connecting my hard drive with a USB cable which seems to work and not work at random as mentioned in post #2.

There's definitely a relation. And yes, you can connect a 2.5" drive internally without any issues. It's exactly the same as connecting a larger 3.5" disk.

OK, I got good news & bad news.

Good News: I connected my hard drive back into my laptop. I was able to back up everything except for a few things that are corrupt under my USERS folder so all my personal data is now safe! :D. F10 at bootup began booting Vaio Recovery Center. I had no idea about Vaio Recovery Center, there was no paperwork on it and I did not know this was on my hard drive at all but from what I have been reading its a possibility that it is located on a hidden partition of the hard drive.

image009.jpg

I saw "Data Rescue" and began exploring. It was very easy to figure out and it gives you the options to rescue data to an external hard drive or dvd. So I plugged in my Ipod classic and it was instantly recognized and i began backing up files. Success! Now to backup everything else! Also trying to dig around for logs.

The Bad: When I was backing up data I had a problem where my hard drive would get so far into the back up and it would make 1 loud Click sound and stop reading but continue to spin and the thinking light would blink for every second instead of erratically. This complicated my data rescue and made it take ten times longer then it should have forcing me to restart laptop and rescue in smaller quanities. On the first restart it asked if i wanted chkdsk to edit the boot files for Vaio Recovery and i quickly declined considering it has been working beforehand.

I also noticed that when the hard drive made that click sound and stopped working that the file it froze up on was corrupted. There are several of them. Could this be a head crash? Also for a long while now whenever i would shut down the computer back when it actually worked, that was the last sound it made when it was winding down a loud click.

None of my memory test boot cd's will work. The western digital disk shows its loading but instead of a screen showing up its black. So I have been unable to run any kind of extended memory tests. My CD drive is a hit or miss when it comes to booting from a cd for some reason usually forcing me to restart and try to boot again. Chkdsk only seems to run successfully when its in my laptop and not from a usb adaptor cable.

After running chkdsk since last post I was able to get to my desktop but I cannot do anything and i get crashes and bluescreens shortly after. I tried safemode and made it to desktop but it does the same thing so i boot in normal mode. safemode hangs on classpnp.sys still. Every time i bootup in normal mode chkdsk runs to check for consistency, then i get to desktop, then i get a crash or a bluescreen then repeat cycle. have done this 50 or more times... Chkdsk has been doing a number on my hard drive deleting and correcting and recovering etc.. Chkdsk is trying to repair my system by doing this but its not working. I don't think there is anyway I can get the logs either but here is a couple of things i seen several times I was able to jot down on paper.

Chkdsk:
chkdsk could not run because of a newly installed software package.

OK. Just got done backing up the hard drive. A few files were corrupt. I hit F10 and went to Vaio Recovery Center. Then went to Vaio Hard Drive Diagnostics.

CPU Test: Pass

Gave me the option to test multiple hard drives C: and E:

Drive 0
Linear Seek Test Failed
= Linear Seek Test did not pass. --- (E-HDD-001) =
--------------------------------------------------
=-=-=-=-=-Errors were detected on this PC.-=-=-=-
Please run chkdsk to recover the wrong sector --- (E-HDD-005)

Test on Drive E:
= Hard Disk Test Start =
Linear Seek OK
Random Seek OK
Funnel Seek OK

Fixed my laptop! Their was something definitely wrong with the old hard drive it sounded like crap for the past year, ran SUPER HOT and loud making a really loud click sound when powering down. and the last time it ran it started screeching. It was a WD Scorpio Blue 320gb

I got put in a hard drive (WD Scorpio Black 320gb) its running awesome and i got it for less then $50. Then I put in my recovery disks. Thanks for all your input in this thread!

PS: I'm posted from the laptop right now... :)
