BSOD using 3ds max 2012 BCCode a Product 768_1

This is my first post, forgive me if I write anything redundant.

This is the third BSOD I've had while running 3ds max 2012, in a period of four months. I had initially thought that a new feature of the software ( namely the Nitrous viewport driver) was causing the issue, but my computer crashed with the feature disabled. I don't have any experience dealing with mini dump files, or troubleshooting BSODs for that matter. Any help would be much appreciated. I've attached the necessary zip file.

If you're using a USB mouse and keyboard it's safe to ignore the PS2 mouse and keyboard errors in perfmon /report

You have a D-Link DWA-140 RangeBooster N USB Adapter(rev.B2). Win7 does not like wireless USB devices and will spit out BSOD's all day long - especially if using older (Vista-era) drivers (yours date from 2007). Here's my rant about these devices:

I do not recommend using wireless USB devices. Especially in Win7 systems.
These wireless USB devices have many issues with Win7 - and using Vista drivers with them is almost sure to cause a BSOD.
Should you want to keep using these devices, be sure to have Win7 drivers - DO NOT use Vista drivers!!!
An installable wireless PCI/PCIe card that's plugged into your motherboard is much more robust, reliable, and powerful.

Please update your Adobe software (most likely Adobe Reader). The adfs.sys driver dates from 2008.
Please update your Hardware Sensors Monitor program as it's drivers date from 2008
Please update your wired network drivers as they date from 2008
Please update your Wacom Mouse (Bamboo) drivers as they date from 2007 (the 2007 version may be the latest available, but please check and see).

Thank you very much for your speedy reply. I'm taking your advice and updating all the old drivers. I unfortunately have to keep using my wireless USB device for now, until I can replace it. I've had it for as long as I've had my computer (for two years now), and I've never had any problems with it. The BSOD episodes began soon after installing and using the aforementioned software, and the crash only happens when I'm using it. iTunes has also been on while the crashes happened, if that makes any difference. Can the USB device suddenly, after two years of use begin to cause BSOD errors? Could there be another cause , or is this the most probable one? Thanks again for your help.

Well, it's not that easy. For example, if a driver is designed with an unknown fault built in, it may pass testing by the manufacturer. But the fault lies there dormant until something sets it off. This is (usually) a Windows Update (IME).

So it's not the Windows Update that's the problem - but rather it's the defect in the driver that wasn't discovered when it was designed. Microsoft offers guidance on writing drivers according to the rules that they've developed - but they can't force driver writers to comply with that guidance. They also offer a driver certification program where they certify the drivers as suitable for Windows - but not many driver writers/manufacturer's use the service.

If you do everything else that I've suggested, then the only thing left is the wireless USB device.
Is there any way you can move the computer (temporarily) closer to the router - or use an extra long wire instead of the wireless USB device?

Again, I can't thank you enough for your replies. I can't move my computer closer to the router, due to my living situation, but I'll try and get an extra long wire. I've updated nearly all of the drivers including the USB wireless adapter driver, which was out of date. My Wacom tablet doesn't have a mouse, so I might just end up disabling or uninstalling that driver.

If I get another BSOD after all the driver updates I'll definitely get rid of the USB wireless adapter. Thank you again for all your help, you're a life-saver.

5 Months with no BSOD then...

it happened again. I updated and/or deleted obsolete drivers in hopes of resolving the issue. Nothing worked until I installed the latest drivers for my Radeon 4850 card and that seemed to have fixed the problem. But late last night, after 5 months of smooth sailing, I suffered two BSODs in the span of a few hours.

For some reason I was still not convinced that the USB wireless adapter was the issue, but I can't think of anything else, so I'm going to uninstall it today and hope for the best. Sorry for not taking your advice earlier, usasma. In any case, I'm uploading the new dump files, just in case there's something new in there. I'd really appreciate it if anyone would take a look at it. Thanks in advanced. I'll keep the thread going and post any improvements with relation to uninstalling the USB adapter.

PS: The SF diagnostic tool was giving me issues. I hope everything's in there. If not, let me know and I'll re-upload.

My assessment of your problem is based on possibilities and likelihoods - not by cold hard "this is the cause" facts.
There's just too much going on inside the OS to make statements like that - even with blame assigned by the debugger.

In this case, the blame is laid on a DirectX driver (dxgmms1.sys) in both memory dumps.
The possibilities are:
- that it's a 3rd party driver causing dxgmms1.sys to crash
- that there's a hardware problem that causes dxgmms1.sys to crash
- that there's a Windows problem that causes dxgmms1.sys to crash

Because DirectX is most often associated with your video sub-system - and because you mention updating your video drivers - we've got to suspect video issues first.
