I keep getting BSOD when I try to put my 5 year old HP Pavilion dv6000 laptop in sleep mode, by either tapping the power button, or going through the start menu. This started happening a couple days ago, after Windows did an update.

I've done a system file check and it came up clean, and I also updated my video drivers, but to no avail. I don't really know where to go from here.

I also ran the SF Diagnostic tool, and attached the resulting folder.

First off Congrats on installing 2 Antivirus ..... Avast and MSE !!!! What were you thinking ????????

Second the startup list .... what do i say.... Are you expecting this laptop to run like Usain Bolt !!!

Third the BSOD's are Power state failure errors caused by the Authentec fingerprint drivers, memory corruption caused by the display driver (nvidia)...

Do the below first

1. Since the drivers at HP are pretty old and try reinstalling the drivers and then go to device manager and right click on the authentec driver and select properties and go to power management ...uncheck the "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power"

2. Remove AVAST and keep MSE

3. Click on start > run ...type msconfig ... uncheck all the items from startup and only keep MSE...

4. Do a memtest for atleast 6-8 passes for each RAM

Do these and let me know

Alright. I have done everything except the memtest, which I am unable to do since I don't have access to any usb key drives or blank cds.

The BSODs have stopped, however now when I try to go into sleep mode the computer hangs on a black screen indefinitely.

What power plan are you running your laptop on ???

on the cmd prompt .... type
powercfg –devicequery wake_armed

I usually have the computer on the "Balanced" power setting.

For the first prompt it returns:
"Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural PS/2 Keyboard with HP QLB
Synaptics PS/2 Port TouchPad"

The second returns:
"Keyboard_Filter_01
Standard Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural PS/2 Keyboard with HP QLB
IPBusEnum Root Enumerator
Realtek RTL8101E Family PCI-E Fast Ethernet NIC (NDIS 6.20)
UMBus Enumerator
Ricoh Memory Stick Controller
ACPI Power Button
SDA Standard Compliant SD Host Controller
Ricoh SD/MMC Host Controller
Synaptics PS/2 Port Touchpad
Ricoh xD-Picture Card Controller"

I will also get on updating my BIOS.

could u put this "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" back on under authentec driver

Let me know if that solves the sleep issue

That sadly did not fix the black screen issue.
It also did not cause the BSOD to come back, so it didn't visibly make things worse.

Yes I did, though that set I updated to is still pretty old. I'm considering seeing if there is a more recent version.

Try this

Click start > run

type cmd.exe

Then type "powercfg -restoredefaultschemes"

and then reboot your system...

Let me know if this works

Thats the lastest updated BIOS version on their site....

This also doesn't seem to have fixed it.
About how long do you think it should take to fall asleep? I've left it for 10-15 minutes with it just frozen on the black screen.
Interestingly though, hibernate works, just not sleep.

Assuming the BSOD didnt return..... try using other power option like the power saver ..

And do this as well ..... After selecting power save ..... go into change plan settings ... then click on "Change Advanced Power Setting" ... then click on Sleep > Allow hybrid sleep.... set both to "OFF" .. this should be off by default

One more thing.... do check the hybrid sleep for the "Balance power" option as well.....

Let me know what you see ...

Sleep shouldn't take much time compared to hibernation, which would take time to save to disk....

Ok. Hybrid sleep was off for all of them.

Also, using other settings didn't change anything.
